Love Hina Spring Special
Episodes Reviewed: DVD
Overall Grade: C-
It seems if there's anything Love Hina and Tenchi Muyo! have in common, it's their pattern that the newest series/movies get worse and betray the original forms.
Storyline: 5
After Keitaro takes the Tokyo U entrance exams yet again, he thinks he didn't pass, and thus runs off. He accidentally goes overboard and finds himself on the strange island archipelago of Pararakelse. When everyone back at the Hinata House finally receive word from him, Naru goes after Keitaro, leaving the rest to find out if they passed the entrance exams. It doesn't take long for everyone else to go after Keitaro too, and thus, yet another Love Hina chase begins.
Type: Romance Comedy
Ch. Development: 6
More big developments! More confessions! More confusions about the Tokyo U promise! A very odd and open-ended ending! Yes, there is still a rendition of "Sakura Saku"!
Sexuality: 6
Slightly more fanservice with the introduction of the leaf bikini! Still not as good as the manga... in it, Shinobu and Motoko also wore leaf bikinis! Mmm... Motoko in a leaf bikini...
Romance: 6
Luckily, there's less focus on romance than the X-mas special, but in this case there should have been more.
Drama: 5
All that's necessary to make this a somewhat interesting story. Of course, sometimes it's so predictable that there isn't much impact.
Action: 4
There is a showdown with a great turtle god near the end! Or was it just a statue? Ah, you'll have to find out on your own, now wouldn't you?
Comedy: 7
Only Keitaro's plight, and the cameo of Shirai and Haitani gives this comedy. Then why the 7? Oh yeah, there's Su's crazy mecha Tamago 3, that weird vehicle that Kentaro uses, Kentaro's wardrobe, and swarms of Pararakelsian turtles.
Dub
Dub Voices: 4
Occasionally good, occasionally makes my ears bleed.
Dub Music: N/A
Dub Lines: 5
Pretty okay.
Well, this is my final Love Hina review! Well, there's still the manga, but that won't be until later! So anyway, you've read the top, so you can pretty much guess what I'm gonna say, right? Then I won't say the obvious stuff.
The Spring movie is pretty funny, has some fanservice, and gets some good character development through, but it ends way too quickly! This doesn't make sense, as there was plenty of material from the manga to use. How about that friendship that is formed between Nyamo and Shinobu? Nonexistent here! Then what was the point of having a character with the exact same looks? Oh, and that picture that Naru finds with Seta and Haruka? What was the point of that? That could have been another episode of the TV series in itself, but if they decided not to use everything up as much as they could, why even mention it?
Of course, what the anime lacks in synchronization with the manga, it makes up for in originality and hidden meanings. Everyone from Hinata House learns about following their dreams and looking ahead to the future, holding on to hope and all that, and that message comes across pretty well. Unfortunately, that is the only saving point of the movie. Add it to your collection, then read the manga.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
