4 on 5 Penalty Kill Drill

Defensive and offensive players line up as shown. This is a drill to help train the penalty kill unit.

Players move ONLY within the zoned area in a box configuration.

Coach passes to the center or player behind the net.

Defending defenseman come up to the goalie line and no further (unless the puck carrier can not control the puck, then go in to tie up the puck for a face off.

Center man passes the puck to the a winger.

Again, defensive unit stays within the box formation.

It is also OK for the defenseman in the defending zone to pressure the puck carrier. But, not past the indicated zone (unless the puck carrier can not control) Then the defender goes in to tie up the puck for a face off.

Winger moves the puck around the zone.

Defensive team, make sure you stay within the zone area. NOTE THE VERY CONTROLLED POSITIONAL SHIFTS.

Ddefensive team needs to time the pass to the other defenseman at the point. This provides an opportunity for intercepting the puck.

Lastly, everyone note that it is safer to pass to a man CLOSER to you: i.e. pass around the defenders.

Power Play units should avoid passing through the defenders!
