Penalty Kill Diamond

This is used to defend against a power-play with one point man.

In the diagram, the X-men are the attackers.

Our responsibilities are as follows:

F1: Pressure 'quarterback' point man. If puck moves to a wing, drop to high slot, and guard against cross ice pass.

F2: Read behaviour of wings. If puck moves to your side, pressure close wing, and take away shooting lane.

D2: Read behaviour of wings. If puck moves to opposite side wing, drop to guard net area from post furtherst from puck, and watch the back door.

D1: Guard net area and low slot, only tie the attacker up in front when a shot is imminent.

KEY IDEAS

Note that similar to the slant-box, no matter what, the high and low slots are protected first.

F1 has the hardest job by having to cover both high slot and middle point, but if middle point gets puck, then F2 must be prepared to replace F1 in high slot.

ALWAYS clear rebounds: ideally your goalie should only have to stop the first shot.

If a shot is coming from the middle, F2 and D2 "box out" potential screens and tips. Otherwise be careful not to screen the goal, or offer your body as a tipping object.
