Penalty Kill

This is used to defend against a power-play with 2 point men, such as the umbrella. In the diagram, the X-men are the attackers. Our responsibilities are as follows: F1: Cut off high lanes to the net on the strong side, and cut off passing lanes to the point. If the puck moves to the middle-point, move to the high slot. F2: Control mid to high slot when puck is on F1-side boards. If puck moves to mid-point, pressure and take away lane to nearest winger (next to face-off circle on diagram). D1: Take any attacker below face-off dot on strong side. If puck moves to middle point, guard net area from near post (to protect back-door). D2: Protect net area and low slot. Important: do not become tied up with man in front unless a shot is taken. You need to stay available to roam entire near-net area to sweep loose pucks and react to quick passes. KEY IDEAS: If you get confused, remember that no matter what, the high and low slots MUST be protected. F1 and F2 cycle together between points and high slot: i.e. at any one time, one forward should be in the high slot, and the other on the strong-side point man. If the weak-side point gets the puck, then the closest forward gets him, and the other forward covers the high slot. The single exception is if D1 comes up for a shot-block: in this case, the forward NOT in the high slot looks for rebound vulnerability, and to cut off passing lanes. ALWAYS clear rebounds: ideally your goalie should only have to stop the first shot. If a shot is coming from the middle, F1 and D2 "box out" potential screens and tips while D1 replaces D2 in front to tie up the man there. Otherwise be careful not to screen the goal, or offer your body as a tipping object. |
