Bulgaria: Prime Minister Ivan Kostov's government survives a no-confidence vote (139-87).
Germany: Roland Koch becomes minister-president of Hessen, succeeding Hans Eichel. On April 12 Eichel becomes federal finance minister.

Austria: J�rg Haider becomes premier of K�rnten.
Jordan: Prime Minister Abdul Rauf al-Rawabdeh wins a parliamentary confidence vote (66-12).
Morocco: King Hassan appoints Mohamed Benaissa as foreign minister.

Djibouti: Presidential elections (turnout 60.4%) are won by Ismail Omar Guelleh with 74.1% of the vote, defeating Moussa Ahmed Idriss (25.9%). He will take office in May.

Niger: President Ibrahim Bar� Ma�nassara is assassinated. On April 11 Daouda Malam Wank� is named as chairman of a National Reconciliation Council. On April 16 a new cabinet is announced. Prime Minister Ibrahim Hassane Mayaki and Finance Minister Ide Niandou are retained, while A�chatou Mindaoudou becomes foreign minister, Col. Moussa Moumouni Djermakoye defense minister, and Lt.Col. Moumouni Bouraima interior minister.

Cameroon: Former British Cameroons premier (1959-61) John Ngu Foncha dies.
Tonga: Former prime minister (1965-91) Prince Fatafehi Tu'ipelehake dies.

Germany: Willi Stoph, former chairman of the Council of Ministers (1964-73, 1976-89) and chairman of the Council of State (1973-76) of East Germany, dies.
Tuvalu: Prime Minister Bikenibeu Paeniu loses a no-confidence vote. On April 27 Ionatana Ionatana is elected new prime minister. His new cabinet includes Lagitupu Tuilimu as finance minister and Faimalaga Luka as minister of home affairs.

Peru: President Alberto Fujimori dismisses several ministers, including Defense Minister Gen. Julio Salazar. The next day Gen. Carlos Bergamino is named defense minister.

Algeria: Presidential elections are held, and Abdelaziz Bouteflika wins 73.8% of the vote at a turnout of 60.3%. All other candidates had withdrawn the previous day. Bouteflika takes office April 27.
Finland: A new government takes office, including Jan-Erik Enestam as defense minister and Kari H�k�mies as interior minister.

India: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee loses a confidence motion by one vote.

China: Former Fujian governor (1954-59) Ye Fei dies.
Turkey: In parliamentary elections, Prime Minister B�lent Ecevit's Democratic Left Party wins 22.2% of the vote (136 of 550 seats), the Nationalist Action Party 18% (129), the Virtue Party 15.4% (111), the Motherland Party 13.2% (86), the True Path Party 12% (85), and the Republican People's Party 8.7% (0). Turnout is 87.1%.

Tunisia: President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali appoints Taoufik Baccar to succeed Mohamed Jeri as finance minister.
