About Us

The Kongoiwa dojo was opened in 1956 by Sensei Bob Liebermann in West London and was the first of its kind in the area. Since then we have changed venues several times to our present premises which are fully equipped.
We are full members of the Mushindo Instructors association and the MKA, our governing organisation, has run courses and seminars ever since then in many European countries.

Currently we have some 7 black belt teachers and over 13 brown belt assistant teachers who hold both private and pubic classes during the daytimes and evenings.
All our groups practice usually in 'Dojo's, these being small groups of students who gather to study, train and discuss the teachings. As there are many teachers of our Kempo in the country some of our instructors, in common with the other London dojos, also teach personal groups of students at other times outside of the dojo environment.
Each of our dojos arranges its own training schedules and practices etc according to the needs of the individual students and many teachers incorporate related studies and arts as well as Kempo itself. Yoga for instance is practiced by many members as is meditation. This system of extra curricular activities is followed by our own dojo and includes classes in healing arts, Buddhist teachings and diagnostic cheirology. Our dojo periodically sends students for advanced study to the Kongoryuji temple in Norfolk as well as participating in the annual overseas seminars held by the MKA.

Our dojo is well run and organised but is very choosy as to who joins it. If you are solvent, have no criminal record, are over 3rd dan (or equivalent) in a proper martial art and know something of the Buddhist teachings or attend a Buddhist group/temple we welcome you to apply for membership. You may contact us at the address shown on our front page.
