Date:
1 July 1999 Summary:
Finally, a live action movie that does justice to a comic book hero. The thing about making a movie based on a comic book character is capturing the mood of the comic book. Characters like Blade and Spawn are very
dark and subdued. Until now all attempts to turn comic book characters into movies have been very disapointing (except for the first Batman movie. It came close to the Dark Knight feel but the casting was way off). But
Blade seems to have dodged that bullet. From the very beginnig it establishes a universe that pours right out of the pages of the comic. Blade (played perfectly by Wesley Snipes) takes on the dark subdued character
without seeming stiff and lifeless. At times some of the gore is over the top but it's mostly balanced by very well choreographed action sequences. This film
is definitely not for children. There are scenes where there's more blood than a blood bank. They've really done a good job capturing the mood. Maybe someday others will catch on and finally do a decent Batman or
Spawn movie. |
