The energy of Matrix makes even the dullest actors interesting.Keanu Reeves wouldn't be my first choice in a martial arts sci-fi action movie, but the story and direction transform him into a role where he doesn't
make you want to poke your eyes out. Although there are times when he "hams" it up, for the most part the film carries him. The story is interesting but visuals and action are what propells this film. Laurence Fishburne
is perfect as Morpheus. He is completely believable. In fact, all the other actors cast seem to belong there except for Keanu. You know who would have been perfect for that role? Wesley Snipes. He's not someone you
laugh at when he fights. He knows how to move and stay in character, But there's no way Hollywood would cast black men in the two major roles of an action film.
Matrix has lots of really good effects which serve to
move the story along. There's not a lot of gratuitous violence with the exception of Morpheus' rescue. The scene in the loby went on too long. There seemed to be hundreds of police pouring onto the scene and getting
blasted in a few seconds. It should have been shorter. The longer it went on the more I didn't believe they could survive the assault. The helicopter scene was great. If you can see it in a theatre with good sound it's
worth it.
I would caution letting young kids see it. There's not a lot of blood but scores of people get killed. Other than that it's a pretty fun flick.
