Phantom Menace

See It, But...

Date: 1 July 1999
Summary: George Lucas hasn't directed a film in 20 years, and it shows.

When Star Wars first hit movie theaters it was unlike anything of its time. The scenery and special effects were brand new to the movie going audiences. But 20 years later there have been enormous advances in special effects technology (largely inspired by Lucas himself) which have given that edge to any other director willing to shell out the big bucks for effects.

The Phantom Menace makes so many grandiose promises but fails to deliver on most.  Lucas was so obsesed with creating computer generated characters that he let it get in the way of the story. The Jar Jar Binks character is so pointless and anoying that it makes most people hate the movie for that reason alone. I'm not even going to get into the obvious "ethnic" stereotypes prominent throughout the movie.

Still, I did like it a little better the second time I saw it. The best parts of the movie are the light sabre battles and the pod race. The race was very impressive, especially when you consider that every element in the scene (when moving) is computer generated. The light sabre fights were choreographed beautifully by Ray Park (Darth Maul) who did work in the Mortal Kombat films. But his character wasn't developed.

MORE TO COME...
