The smell of fresh cut grass. The up-close intimacy only a park built for baseball can offer. It's game day in the Cincinnati Reds' new Great American Ball Park, and what a spectacular experience awaits!
As the new home of the Cincinnati Reds, Great American Ball Park will offer more than just a place to watch Cincinnati's team take the field. It will be an event celebrating a new era in Reds' history while staying true to the team's storied past.
The Reds will continue the tradition of playing ball along the waterfront when the team takes the field for the first time in Great American Ball Park, located at Second and Main Street, just east of its current home. To prepare for construction, crews eliminated 14,000 seats in left and center field at Cinergy following the 2000 season. This subtraction, which opened up the once-circular stadium, will be the future site of the Reds Hall of Fame Museum and part of the Great American Ball Park structure itself.
Fans, who were amazed at the open view of the Ohio River from their seats at Cinergy Field in 2001, will be excited to see it from their seats at Great American Ball Park. With just over 42,000 seats, closer views of the playing field, and different food and entertainment options, Great American Ball Park will offer fans a baseball experience unlike anything they've experienced in the past.
Imagine it: As fans approach the ballpark along Second and Main Street, a brick facade running parallel to Second Street with a caption reading "Rounding Third and Heading for Home" can be seen on the front of the Reds administration office building. Once inside the main entrance area, a Crosley Terrace representation with statues of Cincinnati greats Joe Nuxhall, Ernie Lombardi, Ted Kluszewski and Frank Robinson will greet fans. South of the main entrance, the Reds Hall of Fame Museum - complete with memorabilia and interactive fun areas - will be a great place for fans to share in Reds' history when it opens in 2004.
Inside the ballpark many different sights, sounds and smells will scream baseball and Cincinnati pride. Aside from the main scoreboard, there will be other scoring panels updating fans on the action of the game, as well as other Major League matchups. A great sound system is assured to rouse fans out of their seats and to get them involved in the action, and abounding food options with themed concession areas will tantalize taste buds as fans stroll through the open concourses.
Fans will surely marvel at the new features introduced in Great American Ball Park, but they will also be excited to enjoy the long-standing American tradition of watching a game of baseball. During the past century, through turmoil and triumph, baseball has been a constant in American life. And the ballpark, the place where fans of all ages come together to support their team, represents the unifying structure - one that brings people together to celebrate their common interest. Great American Ball Park promises to live up to its name by being home to teams, fans, and a game all of which are... Greatly American.
