Amazonas
This department is located in the north orient of Peru. In this area the
weather is very hot (40°C) but exist areas where the
weather is 0.2°C. The capital is
Chachapoyas, a city with big mansions surrounded by
orchards, gardens, and beautiful balconies.
The principles tourists places are the Plaza
de Armas or main square, a perfect grid decotated
with a beautiful Colonial style bronze
fountain. Churches of Señor de
Burgos and Santa Ana. Señor de Burgos is one of the first churches
of its kind built by the Spanish conquistadors. Yanayacu well, Built by
Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo, the well has
become a source of legends and an inspiration for
lovers. Higos-Urco Pampas. A historic battleground in the wars that led to
the proclamation of Peru's independence by General San Martín. A pretty
small square built as memorial.
Santa Lucía Grotto, near the local airport, features a beautiful orchid
nursery. San Antonio Tunnels
along the Chachapoyas-Rodríguez de Mendoza road include beautiful
natural stone bridges over the San Antonio river.
