The Complete Solution
For Monkey Island 1

Part One: The Three Trials

 

After the introduction sequence walk across the bridge to the scumm bar and enter. Talk to the pirate dressed in red at the first table. Tell him you want to be a pirate and ask him about the governor.

When he asks you to leave. Talk to Estaven at the far table that Mancomb points you towards to get more info on Lechuck.

Once you have finished talking to him go behind the curtain and Talk to the important looking Pirates. Tell them you want to be a pirate and get al the information on the three trials you need. Once done, stand by the fire place and wait for the cook to leave the kitchen from the door on the right. When he goes off the screen, go in.

First pick up the hunk off meat on the table and the pot under the table. Then go out to the pier where a bird will be pecking at a fish, walk to the edge of the pier and Guybrush will stamp on a loose plank. Keep clicking on the plank until the bird flies high enough for you to grab the fish.

 

Leave the scumm bar and watch the meanwhile scene with Lechuck.

Head back the way you came and talk to the lookout man. Then exit to the right. First go to the Fork and walk into the nearest set of tress to you and pick a petal from the yellow flower. Exit the forest by going back the way you came.

 

Now go to the clearing. Enter the circus tent and say something to distract the two men arguing. When they ask you to be shot out the cannon, accept and say you have a helmet. When they ask you for it, give them the pot. Once you’ve been shot out the cannon say anything you want when they wake you up and you will leave with the money.

 

Return to the village and this time walk past the scumm bar and through the arch way. Talk to the Citizen of Melee and when he asks you if you have a cousin named Sven say the last option that is, no but you do have a monkey named Dominique.

Pay him for the map and then talk to the three pirates on the right. Get the minutes of them by asking if they know the sneaky looking man on the opposite corner then bagging another 2 pieces of eight.

Open the door in the centre of street to your right and enter the voodoo shop. Pick up the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle on the table on the bottom right of the screen then leave the screen to your right and talk with the voodoo lady. Ask her about your future and when she no longer talks to you leave the shop and exit through upper arch way.

 

Go up the alley and talk with Fester Shine top. Then leave the alley and go to the prison cells to your left. Talk with the prisoner then leave. Go back to your right and enter the first door you saw when you first walked up the archway to enter the general store. Go up the stairs and pick up the Shovel. Go back down and pick up the sword on the shelf next to the storekeeper. Talk to the storekeeper, ask about both items and say you want them. Pay him and also ask for a breath mint. Then say you just want to browse and ignore the sword master option for now.

 

Return to the prison and give the breath mints to the prisoner. Talk to him and learn the stuff about his dislike of carrot cake and how his aunt gave it to him and who he is and mention the sheriff last. The sheriff then should enter. Say something to him and he will leave. Exit the prison.

 

Walk to your left through another archway. Walk across the cliff ledge to the governor’s mansion. Use the hunk of meat with the yellow petal. Then throw the meat with ointment at the deadly piranha poodles.

Enter the mansion and Enter the door on the top wall. Watch the fight with the sheriff and when you escape leave the mansion and again return to the prison. Give Otis the gopher repellent which you picked up during the fight and he will give you the Carrot cake. Open the carrot cake to find a file.

 

Go back to the mansion and go through the hole. Watch another fight scene and when the governor comes out say any excuse on the list and when the sheriff leaves talk with the governor until she leaves. Exit the mansion and bump into the sheriff. Whatever you say, you will end up under water. To get out simply pick up the Idol and guybrush will make his way out picking up another sword. Watch the love scene with Guybrush and Elaine.

 

Exit the village and go to the shore at the top right of the island. Use the rubber chicken on the cable to get across to the island. Open the door to the house and enter. Talk with the pirate. You can have a bit of fun with him hear by taking the Mickey by calling him a cannon ball head etc. When you leave or he throws you out return to the map.

make your way to the house on the bottom right of the island. You will be stopped by a troll on the bridge but just give him the fish to pass. Once at the house open the door and talk with the man. Ask him to train you so you are better than the sword master. When he says you don’t have what it takes. Keep saying you do until he gives in. Watch the training and when he chucks you out you must exit to the melee island map and fight pirates. You must wait for one to bump into you. Say prepare to die to begin.

When you say an insult they must respond with the correct one in order to win that round. When they say an insult you must respond with the correct reply to win a round. When a pirate says an insult or a reply you will learn it. You must learn all insults and replies before facing the sword Master. These are the ones you should learn. Insults are in red. The correct replies are under them in plain text.

Once you have learnt all the reply’s or as many as you can and have won at least three fights Return to the village and go to the general store. Tell the storekeeper you are looking for the sword master and he will leave the shop. Now you must follow him out the village and through the fork to her secret hideout. Once the store keeper leaves approach and fight. Unlike the pirates, you will not throw insults at her, She will throw them at you and you have to respond correctly a number of times to win.

Hear are her insults and your reply’s that go with them.

 

Only once I have met such a coward.

He must have taught you everything you know.

Note: if there is anything wrong with the lists of insults and replies e-mail me with the problem.

Once you have defeated the sword master, leave her and go to the fork. Look at your map the citizen gave you. At first it will appear you have been conned but it’s just in code. Ignore the two-three-fours at the end of each sentence. When it says right, go right. When it says left go left and when it says back, walk up into the nearest set of trees to you. When you get to the cha, cha, cha bit you have made it. When you have finished following the map go right and read the sign. Then use the shovel on the x to dig up the treasure. Now with all trials done return to the village.

 

Watch the ghost ship disappear into the distance and when the lookout man comes and says the governor’s been kidnapped say something to make him go away then read the note.

Go to the scumm bar and pick up all the mugs. Go behind the curtain, pick up the rest of the mugs and talk with the cook who will tell you to get a crew and a ship together. Go into the kitchen and use one of the mugs on the barrel. Now quickly make your way to the prison. When the mug starts to melt away, use it on another mug. If it melts completely before you get to the prison. you will have to return to the scumm bar and try again.

Once at the prison use the current melting mug on the lock to free Otis. Tell him the governor’s been kidnapped to get him on your crew. Don’t worry when he runs away he will still come. You can now go back to the voodoo lady to learn more about your future.

Next go to the island where you met meathook and tell him the governor has been kidnapped. Tell him you should be the captain and will want you to prove you can be, When he takes you to the right and opens all the doors and leaves you. Open the cage and do something to it. eg: tickle the parrot. and he will then be on your crew.

Note: on older versions of the game he may kick you out the first time you see the parrot so you will have to go back and try again.

Now go back to the sword master and tell her the governor has been kidnapped to get her on your crew.

To get the ship go to the lights at the bottom of the island and talk with Stan. When he invites you to have a look around say you don’t have much to spend and he will take to the ship at the top. When he starts talking means of finance say you were hoping to get one on credit, then leave and go back to the village and the general store.

Talk with the storekeeper and ask him for a note of credit and say you are employed when he goes to open the safe, note down the combination of the safe as he turns the handle. eg right, right, left etc.

Note: on faster computers it may be too fast for you to note down so you will have to keep taping the space bar to pause the game so you get a chance to get it all down

When he comes back you have to tell him your job but he won’t believe you so you he will go and put the note back. This will give you another chance to get the combination.

Note If you fail to get the combination you will have to return to Stans and then come back

Now tell him you are looking for the sword master again so he leaves. Enter the combination of the safe by pushing or pulling the handle. Then return to Stans with the credit. Say you’re interested in looking at the cheap boat again and then show him the credit. Now you must talk extras and reject everything he says by saying that you can live without that particular piece of junk, until he starts repeating himself. Then say you don’t need the ship anyway but when Stan says come back, do so. Hopefully now the price of the ship will be down far enough for you to make an offer of 5000 and Stan will accept it. If not go away mad again but this time go right away then come back and try again.

When Stan leaves you can try and get a grog by using your money on the vending machine but you will not have any success so go to the village to meat up with Stan and your crew.

 

 

Part Two: The Journey

 

When your crew rejects you and you end up in the captain’s cabin. Open the left hand drawer on the desk and pick up the dusty book and read it. Pick up the feather pen and the ink on the table. Then exit.

Go up the rope ladder and pick up the jolly Roger before climbing back down.

Go down the hatch then down the other hatch to the cellar.

Pick up the rope from the bottom of the cellar, some gunpowder from the kegs in the middle of the room and open the chest to the bottom right and pick up the fine wine.

Leave the cellar and go through the door next to the ladder to the kitchen. Pick up the pot on the left hand side table and open the cabinet. Pick up a cereal packet and open it to get a toy prize. Open the prize to reveal a key.

Return to the captain’s cabin and use the key to open the cabinet on the right. Pick up the chest and then open it. Look at it to find a piece of paper and some cinnamon sticks. Return to the kitchen and look at the paper. It is a voodoo recipe to get to monkey Island. Some of the ingredients are disguised so here is a list of the proper stuff you have to put in the cooking pot.

 

Gunpowder

Rubber chicken

Breath mints

Fine wine

Jolly roger

Cereal

Cinnamon sticks

Ink

Once you have added all the ingredients the pot will explode and you will go in the direction of Monkey Island but pass out. When you wake up. Click anywhere to pick yourself up. Use something flammable on the red-hot flame e.g.: Map or Stan’s business cards. Then go to the cellar and take some more gunpowder from the kegs. Go up to the main deck where you discover you are at Monkey Island. Use the gunpowder on the cannon nozzle use the rope on the cannon itself then the flaming mass on the fuse then quickly use the pot

Note: On faster machines it may go off before you use the pot so try using the pot before the flaming mass on the fuse then he might use the pot automatically when the fuse is burning down. But I don’t guarantee it will work. If you fail to use the pot in time you will have to get more gunpowder and burn something else and try again.

 

Part Three: Monkey Island

 

When your cursor appears again click anywhere to pick yourself up and read the notice on the tree. You will see a lot of these memos. When you come across pick it up and read it.

Pick up the banana next to the tree before leaving the beach.

Head north to the next screen of the map then west to another screen of the map. Go to the fort. Pick up the rope and the spy glass. Then push the cannon. When Toothrot comes talk to him until he leaves then pick up the cannonball and the gunpowder. Leave and head east to the next screen and go to the river fork. Go up the foot holes and then push and pull the catapult thing so the rock faces directly upwards away from the screen. Go up the other footholes. Talk to toothrot when he comes and when he leaves push the rock of the cliff to hit the banana tree. For a bit of a laugh walk to the right and fall off the cliff. Don’t worry you wont die.

 

Go back to the bottom of the river fork and pick up the noteworthy rock. Use the gunpowder on the dam and then when you are standing next to the dam use the cannon ball or the spyglass on the note worthy rock.

 

Once the dam has exploded. Go to the pond and talk to toothrot again. Hear you should be able to get the whole deal about who he is and that he has the key to the monkey head etc. When he leaves pick up the rope and leave. Go to the south end of the island and go to the crack.

Use one of your ropes on the tree branch and the other one on the sturdy stump. Climb down and pick up the ores.

Go back to the south beach where you started and pick up the bananas that fell from the tree. Use the ores on the boat. Then row round the island past the cliffs in which you couldn’t pass and row to the far north beach. Leave the beach and go to the village. Walk to the far left and pick up some more bananas. Walk right to meat up with the cannibals. Whatever you say they will end up locking you in one of the huts.

Pick up the skull and open the lose floorboard to escape. You cannot fit through with the banana picker.

 

Now row back to the far south beach. Leave the beach and go to the monkey. Give the monkey all the bananas then head to the east end of the map and go to the clearing. Head right and pull the totem poles nose facing the screen. Walk away and the monkey will do the same allowing you to get closer to the monkey head. Pick up the puny little idol, then return to the cannibals. To get them to come walk to the far left end of the village then walk back. Say Don’t eat me ill give you anything then give them the puny little idol. When they leave, go left and enter the hut. Pick up the banana picker leave the hut and go right. Give toothrot the banana picker and he will give you the monkey head key. Leave the village then come back and talk to the canibals again. Say there is something when they offer to repay you. Keep talking to them to get the whole deal on the voodoo root etc. When you have nothing else to say. say you are going to find the root and they will mention that it’s impossible to get through the monkey head without the… then they will stop. Beg them to tell you about it. They will talk about the head but will not let you have it. Look at the various leaflets Stan gave you and give them the one that says "How to get a head in navigating. When you have the head return to the monkey head and use the key in the ear and enter. Use the head of navigator then follow it’s nose to the monkey head.

Note: if you wind up going in circles try ignoring where it tells you to go once or twice and go in a different direction. it should then correct itself.

 

Once at the ghost ship talk to the head and ask for it’s invisible necklace. When he doesn’t let you have it. Keep asking for it again and again or use various means of sarcasm and threatening comments to get him to give it to you. Use the necklace to put it on and enter the ship. Go left and open the door to Lechuck’s cabin. Use the magnetic compass on the key hanging from the wall to get it then leave. Walk right and go down the hatch. Walk into the next room and pick up a chicken to get a feather. Go back to the previous room and tickle the sleeping ghost’s feet twice so he drops the grog. Pick up the grog then walk back to the chicken room again. Use the key on the trap door and go down into the room of rats. Use the grog on the rats dish then pick up some grease from the big pot. Return to the upper deck and use the grease on the door on the right to stop it from squeaking. Enter the room and pick up the tools on the wall. Return to the chicken room and use the tools on the chest and look at the open chest to get the root. Leave the ship and you will automatically return to the cannibals. Say you have the root. When they go and mix it up talk to the three headed monkey until they come back. Leave with the root bear and you will return to the ghost ship except it’s not there anymore. Talk to the skeleton and promise not to zap him and he will tell you where the ship has gone. Talk to your crew when they come.

 

 

Last Part: Guybrush Kicks Butt

 

Once back on melee, walk right and say anything to zap the ghost. Talk to the ghost on the corner and say you have your ticket in the root bear to zap him. Go through the archway and enter the church.

Say something to distract Lechuck and talk to him until the governor arrives. Talk to the governor until she leaves. Anger Lechuck until he punches you. Wait until you end up in Stan’s grog machine and when Lechuck pulls you out quickly pick up the root bear and zap him with it by using it on him to finish the game.

If he punches you to a different location before you pick up the root bear you will have to wait until you get punched back. Once you have picked up the root bear you can zap him at any location.
