A Brief History of Dragon's Keep-4/29/95
Due to the great crisis of 1202, many of the family histories of thepeople of Dragon's Keep were destroyed. As a result, the oldest recordedancestor was Orep-Tar of the McCaffery line. Orep-Tar was born just as hisfather fell in the battle of four fronts on February 2, 1178. His motherdied 3 months later, at which point he was put under the care of his mother'sbest friend, Gloria. He lived a rather normal life, and was married on March3,1203. He was sent off to procure foodstuffs from the Dragons on March17, was banished the same day, and lived in exile on the opposite face ofthe mountain. There he remained until news reached him of the Spectre rampageheaded by Wulf on August 18, 1239. Shortly after the fall of the Spectrearmy, Orep-tar learned that he had a son named Garret, now 36, and that
he
had a son named Jonas and a daughter named Christina. Orep-tarcontinued to be a prominent citizen in the community and the sole scholarof Dragons until he was buried in an avalanche during his morning constitutionalat the age of 106 on September 9,1284.
Many generations of McCafferys passed, and Oldurate remained a faithfulfriend, bearing each generation. Finally, on May 13,1978, Josef and BarbaraMcCaffery gave birth to a child with the instincts of a Dragon, the speedof the wind, and beauty of the winter morn, who they named Miranda. Shewas exceptionally bright in her schooling, and had an uncanny way with Dragons.
For the most part, Dragons are still suspicious of humans, and rarely tonever let them into the great hall of the Dragon, and had never in recordedhistory allowed them near their young. However, she accomplished both. Furthermore,at the age of 7, at which a boy would be allowed to adopt an orphaned beast,she ignited a controversy by requesting a Dragon orphan. It was not so muchthe requesting a Dragonling, such things are relatively run of the mill,but she was a female, and such things, were unheard of, this being a societytaken from the dark ages. After many days of work towards a decision, itwas finally decided that their existing system was outdated, and ammended this useless legality. In this way,Miranda acquired her Dragonling on August 19, 1985.
However, the happiness was shortlived. Her Dragonling was killed in a pettydispute on November 1, 1985. The Dragon responsible was said to have joinedthe Kezare tribe and has not been seen or heard of since. Following this,Miranda went into a depressed, catatonic state which she emerged from aftershe was given a gift from her mother. Barbara McCaffery, being endlesslyresourcefull and an impeccable seamstress, crafted from the hide of thefallen Dragonling a suit of Dragon mail the likes of which the world hasnever seen. Furthemore, as she was the only heir of the McCaffery fine,she was granted the services of Oldurate. In this way, Miranda of Dragon'sKeep came into her own.
