ELDARIN GLOSSARY INTRODUCTION The purpose of this game aid is to allow the Game Master and players to read and write in either of the two major Eldarin tongues, i.e. Sindarin and Quenya. Included in this booklet are English/Quenya, Sindarin and Sindarin, Quenya/English translations. All of Tolkien's works to 1983 have been included. Also included is a brief section on the writing systems including those used by the Sindarin, Noldor, Dunedain, Men and those speaking the black speach. The dictionary sections are outlined according to the major Eldarin dialect spoken, with gramatical classifications, translations and what major work they were found in. The only outside additions to the dictionary are through the logical derivatives of words found in Tolkien's works. Two forms of writing were created for depicting sounds, namely the Tengwar and the Certar. Only the different modes of the Tengwar will be covered in this booklet. Examples of the use of the Certar can be found in the Appendices of the third volume of the Lord of the Rings. The earliest forms of the Tengwar were formulated by Rumil, a Noldo. Later they were modified by Feanor, also a Noldo, and this is the script that led to the formation of the various different modes. Feanor's script was that introduced to the Edain and the Numenoreans. The following tables show some of the various major modes in use during the third age of Middle Earth. For in depth explanations of the Tengwar refer to the Lord of the Rings. SINDARIN English to Sindarin Sindarin in the third age of Middle Earth was the predominant Eldarin tongue spoken. The following are explanations of the use of some of the parts of speach and examples of their use. Letters and letter combinations used in Sindarin. a, ae, ai, au/aw, b, c, d, dh, e, ei, f, g, h, hw, i, l, lh, m, n, ng, o, oe, p, ph, r, s, t, th, u, ui, v, w, y y is always considered a vowel and i will take on the consonental value of y before another vowel as in the English yes or you. (ex. Iarwain pronounced as Yarwain.) All prnounciations will follow those outlined by Tolkien in the LotR. NOUNS In Sindarin words do not always or frequently end in vowels. Therefore, pluralization will be accomplished by modifying one or more vowels within the word itself. changes vowel shifted to location example a ai final aran - erain a e initial aran - erain e i internal certh - cirth o y internal horn - hyrn y i internal lyg - lig ai i or i internal lain - lin Some nouns will not change as expected as in orod being ered as plural and not eryd. Also certain nouns (place indicators etc.) will use a suffix to indicate the plural (ex. dor - doriath). ADJECTIVES Adjectives also occur in the singular and plural and will follow the rules governing the changes in nouns. VERBS The verb tenses for Sindarin are more numerous than the examples for Quenya. The following are verb tenses given in Tolkien's works as well as, extrapolated forms. tense indicator example imperative o or io added to stem daro future s.1st thon, athon linnathon present s.1st n, on nallon s.3rd a, na penna past s.1st in, en chebin s.3rd ant teithant extrapolated forms: future person singular plural 1st (a)thon (a)thyn 2nd (a)thos (a)thys 3rd athon aithon present person singular plural 1st n, on n, yn 2nd s, os s, ys 3rd a, na ai, nai past person singular plural 1st in, en in 2nd es is 3rd ant aint English Sindarin -able;
