"...and the rolling mist closes over the ever-moving waves as they wash upon the golden sand of the shore. The cry of gulls fills the morning air. The wind, flowing through your hair and kissing your tongue with the gentle taste of the salty sea..."

Resting upon the far reaches of the western coast, Mithlond is the one of the most westerly of civilizations to be found there. It remains far from the strife and danger present in the other Elven homes of Middle-earth.

Mithlond is a Sindarin word; one of the Elven languages. It's meaning is 'grey land', and some call the city the Grey Havens. The people there are collectively referred to as the Mithlondhrim and choose to remain there under the lordship of Cirdan the Shipwright, the oldest and wisest Elf remaining in the Middle-earth.

Elves leave the land of Middle-earth in two ways: death by violence or weariness of the world. When weary, Elves leave the land and travel to a golden place called Valinor, the Undying Lands, and live there with those who passed there before them. Valinor is reached by the white swan ships of Mithlond, ferrying the Elves to the Blessed Realm and returning home afterwards.

The Grey Havens lie about the mouth of the river Lhun, one portion on each side of the river. Further down the banks of the Gulf of Luhn, north and south, are the harbours of Forlond and Harlond, little-known to those in Middle-earth. To the east of Mithlond lies the quiet Shire, the home of the Hobbits; and to the north in the Blue Mountains, the Dwarves of Ered-Luin find their abode.

Ships are the main province of Mithlond, and the sailing of those vessels. There are sailors in abundance, and shipwrights for the constructing of the fine Elven boats, sail-makers and astronomers. Other things there are that remain peculiar to the city; pearl being one of them, and wine which is ever in comparison to that of Imladris, another Elven home.

Mithlond has a library with a great store of knowledge; the Blue Dolphin Inn, where revelous events occur; vineyards and fountains; and a selection of skilled healers to delve into the knowledge of herbs. The local ruling body is the Shipwright's Guild, headed by Lord Cirdan.
