Something is no longer just out there -- it's here; and the people who keep insisting they have seen UFOs aren't crazy --they're just unlucky, in "Target Earth," the suspenseful drama of an alien invasion that just might happen before the 11 o'clock news tonight.
Christopher Meloni ("The Last Don"), Marcia Cross ("Melrose Place"), Dabney Coleman, Chad Lowe and newcomer Courtney Crumpler are among the stars of this world premiere film.
Sam Adams (Meloni), a small-town cop who has grown accustomed to looking at an empty future and a painful past, suddenly holds the future of the human race in his hands when he becomes the protector of a beautiful woman and her little girl -- a six-year-old who may be the only one who can stop an unthinkable attack before it happens.
The child is Tammy MacKaphe (Courtney Crumpler), and the secret plans of the alien invaders have been hypnotically implanted in her mind. The problem for Sam and Tammy's mother, Karen (Marcia Cross), is finding the key to bring out those secrets before all three are killed off by police and federal agents who are controlled by the alien force.
Senator Ben Arnold (Coleman) is Sam's uncle; he could bring in the might of the U.S. government to solve the mystery, but -- as a Presidential candidate -- he won't risk his credibility by acknowledging "flying saucers." Naples (John McGinley) is a federal agent whose loyalty has been turned by one of the brain implants that are silently undermining society. And Commander Fauk (Chad Lowe) is the alien leader who has given Naples one key assignment: Kill that kid.
Sam, Karen and Tammy are lonely but they are not alone: A small but fearless group of Americans who know the truth -- and are rejected by society as "kooks" -- are with them all the way, and together this raggle-taggle bunch must face the might of an alien race and the mindless treachery of the invader's human allies.
Peter Markle ("The X-Files") directed the Symphony Entertainment film, written by Michael Vickerman. The executive producers were Bill Greenblatt and Sam Grogg; co-executive producers were Carol Ames, Michael Vickerman, Michael Cieply, Don Safran and George Mays.
Karen is worried about her daughter.
Policeman Sam Adams finds Tammy and brings her home.
Sam brings Tammy her doll and ends up having coffee with Karen.
Sam tells Karen that his wife disappeared 4 years ago never to be found.
When Karen takes Sam up to Tammy's room to give her her doll, they find her reciting nursery rhymes, and saying all kinds of weird stuff about someone coming and about finding Emmett to tell him this information.
Karen shows Sam some pictures of aliens and space ships that Tammy drew.
Karen & Tammy get a visit from FBI Agent Naples, the bad guy sent to extract the secret information out of Tammy.
Karen gets beat up and Naples almost gets Tammy, but Sam shows up and saves them.
They escape to Sam's house but Naples follows them along with Sam's partner, Chip, who has been brainwashed against them. Karen hits Chip with a baseball bat.
Sam, Karen, and Tammy hide under a bridge for the night.
Sam goes to his fellow police officer, Madeline, for help. She's not sure about him at first, but she then agrees to help. They decifer one of Tammy's rhymes and come to the conclusion that they must call a certain delivery service called "Minute Men" to find Emmett.
Sam calls "Minute Men" and asks for Emmett, but the conversation is interrupted when Naples arrives at Madeline's door. Sam, Karen, & Tammy hide in the basement and then escape through the basement's window. Madeline locks Naples in the basement and follows them.
They walk away from the house until they meet up with Emmett and his people, who tracked them down by tracing the phone call.
Emmett knows that people get abducted by aliens, and some get implants, which get activated when needed, as in Chip's case. It's the aliens plans to take over the world.
They all arrive at Emmett's headquarters. There, they download all the information from Tammy's mind by having her writing it out as binary code.
Tammy finishes her writing and is back to her old normal self.
Emmett has no more need for Karen or Tammy. He and his crew go to give this information to Senator Ben Arnold (Sam's uncle) to use. Ben turns out to be conspiring with the aliens. He and Emmett end up killing each other.
Sam and Madeline, the only two left, prepare to destroy the alien base that is in a hangar, just out of town. They say goodbye to Karen and Tammy and send them to stay with an old lady friend of Sam's.
Sam reunites with Karen and Tammy after destroying the alien base. Madeline turned out to be an implant, so Sam had to kill her too. THE END.
