11. FORMS OF THE VERB USED AFTER THE WORDS "IF" AND "WISH" -
QAABAB LA ISTICMAALAYO ERAYADA "IF" IYO "WISH" KA DIB

"If"

Sentences using the word if usually consist of two clauses, each with its own verb. If the verb of the if clause refers to something which is either hypothetical or not true, the following verb forms are usually used:

1) If the sentence refers to the present or the future, the Simple Past is used for the verb of the if clause, and the word would (wUd) is used before the verb of the other clause. For example:

If I invited them, they would come.
Haddii anigu aan marti qaadi laha, iyagu way iman kari lahayeen.

It should be noted that in informal English, the verb was may be used in the if clause. However, in formal English, this use of was is considered incorrect, and the verb were should be used instead. For example:

Informal English: If I was rich, I would travel. Haddii aan hodan ahaan lahaa, aniga waan safri lahaa.
Formal English: If I were rich, I would travel. Haddii aan hodan ahaan lahaa, aniga waan safri lahaa.

2) If the sentence refers to the past, the Past Perfect is used for the verb of the if clause, and the Past Conditional is used for the verb of the other clause. For example:

If I had invited them, they would have come.
Haddii anigu aan marti qaadi laha, iyagu way iman lahayeen.

If I had seen you, I would have opened the door.
Haddii anigu aan arki laha, anigu waan ka furi karay irida.

Depending on the meaning to be expressed, the word unless (anles) is sometimes used instead of the word if. For example:

Unless I invited them, they would not come.
Aan anigu marti qaadi leheeyn iyaga, iyagu ma iman kari leheeyn.

"Wish"

The verb wish is often followed by a subordinate clause containing its own verb. The following verb forms are usually used for the verb of the subordinate clause:

1) If the clause refers to the past, the Past Perfect form of the verb is used. For example:

I wish you had come yesterday.
Waxaan rabi laha in aad timadid shalay.

2) If the clause refers to the present, the Simple Past form of the verb is used. For example:

I wish you were here now.
Waxaan rabi laha in aad joogtid halkan hadda.

It should be noted that in informal English, the verb was may be used as the verb of the subordinate clause. However, in formal English, this use of was is considered incorrect, and the verb were should be used instead. For example:

Informal English: I wish I was rich. Waxaan rajeeyna laha in aan noqdo qof hodan ah.
Formal English: I wish I were rich. Waxaan rajeeyna laha in aan noqdo qof hodan ah.

3) If the clause refers to a later time, the word would is used before the verb. For example:

I wish you would come tomorrow.
Waxaan rabi laha in aad awodi kartid in aa timadid beri.

Depending on the meaning to be expressed, the word could is sometimes used instead of the word would. For example:

I wish you could come tomorrow.
Waxaan rabi laha in aad kari kartid in aad timaadid beri.

I wish you could have come yesterday.
Waxaan rabi laha in aad awoodi kartay in aad timaadid shalay.
