6. THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS AND THE SIMPLE FUTURE -
QAAB XAALAD SOCOTA IYO QAAB XAALAD LA SAADALINAYO

The Present Continuous

The Present Continuous tense of a verb is formed from the Present Participle and the Simple Present of the verb be. For example:

I am opening waan furaya
you are opening waad furaysa, waad furaysan
he is opening wuu furaya
she is opening way furaysa
we are opening waanu furayna
they are opening way furayan

The Present Participle of a verb is formed by adding the ending ing to the verb. Sometimes the spelling is changed when the ending ing is added:

If the verb ends in a silent e, the e is omitted before the ending ing is added. For example:

Verb and Present Participle of the Verb

close
(klooz) xidhan, xiran, closing
come
(kam) kaalay, imow, coming
drive
(draayv) kaxayn, wadid, driving
give
(giv) sii, bixin, la siiyo, giving
hate
(heyt) nacbeysi, dhibsi, karhid, hating
invite
(invaayt) casuumid, marti qaadid, inviting
lose
(luuz) lumisid, lumid, dhumid, losing
love
(lav) jacayl, jeceel, cashaq, loving
make
(meyk) samayn, suubiin, la sameeyo, making
move
(muuv) dhaqaajiin, socodsiin, moving
ride
(raayd) fulid, farda fulid, riding
smile
(smaayl) ilka caseyn, smiling
smoke
(smook) qiiq, qaac, smoking
take
(teyk) qadid, qadasho, taking
use
(yuuz) isticmaal, isticmaalid, using
write
(raayt) qor, qorid, dhigid, writing

If the verb ends in ie, the letters ie are changed to y before the ending ing is added. For example:

Verb and Present Participle of the Verb

die
(daay) dhimo, dhimasha, dying
lie
(laay) jiifsad, la jiifsado; been, lying

If the verb is pronounced with the most stress on the last syllable, and ends in a single vowel followed by a single consonant, the consonant must be doubled before the ending ing is added. For example:

Verb and Present Participle of the Verb

begin
(biigin) bilabid, bilow, beginning
put
(pUt) dhig, la dhigo, dhigid, putting
run
(ran) ordid, orad, carar, running
sit
(sit) farii-sasho, fadhi, sitting
stop
(stop) joojin, stajin, lajojiyo, stopping

However, the consonants w, x and y do not follow this rule. For example:

Verb and Present Participle of the Verb

grow
(groo) beerid, la beeray, korin, growing
know
(noo) garasho, garatid, knowing
pay
(pey) bixin, siin, paying
say
(sey) dhihid, deh, orah, la dhaho, saying

The Simple Future

The Simple Future is formed by placing the word will (wil) before the verb. For example:

I will open waan furi doona
you will open waad furi doonta, waad furi doontaan
he will open wuu furi doona
she will open way furi doonta
we will open waanu furi doonna
they will open way furi doonaan

With I or we, the Simple Future is sometimes formed using the word shall (shaal) instead of will. For example:

I shall open waan furi doona
we shall open waanu furi doonna

The Future Continuous

The Future Continuous can be used to refer to future actions which will be continuing for some time. For example:

I will be working tomorrow.
Waan shageyn doona berrito.

The Future Continuous is formed by placing the words will be (wil bii) before the Present Participle. For example:

I will be opening waan furi doona
you will be opening waad furi doonta, waad furi doontaany
he will be opening wuu furi doona
she will be opening way furi doonta
we will be opening waanu furi doonna
they will be opening way furi doonaan

Modal Auxiliary Verbs

Modal auxiliary verbs can be placed before a verb, in order to change the mood of the verb. For example:

can (kaan) karaya, karaysa, waa awoodaa
may (mey) laga yaabaa, bisha maajo
might (maayt) waxaa laga, yaabi lahaa
must (mast) waa in
should (shUd) waa in

He can speak English. Isagu wuu ku hadli kara Ingirisi.

It may rain tomorrow. Waa laga yaba in uu roob dii-doono beri.

She might come. Waa laga yaba in ey timado.

They must go to school. Iyagu waa in ey adan dugsiga.

You should take an umbrella. Adigu waa in aad qadatid dalad.

The expression ought to (ot tuu) has the same meaning as should. For example:

You ought to take an umbrella.
Adigu waa in aad qadatid dalad.

Could and would are often used in order to make a question or statement more polite. For example:

Would you please say that again?
Adigo rali ah ma dhihi karta mar kale?

Could you tell me when the next bus will come?
Ma ii shegi karta marka uu iman doona baska kale?

The two questions above are somewhat more polite than:

Will you please say that again?
Fadlan dheh mar kale?

When will the next bus come?
Goor mu iman doona baska kale?
