I don't know whether somebody made a mistake, or if the Spluggies really thought they were that good, or if the planet just got a lot worse after they started, but it is completely amazing to me that any life exists on this planet at all. I would have expected seeding to produce nothing more complicated than the kind of stuff you see at the bottom of the ocean trenches, living off of geothermal emissions from some lava vent. In fact, that's as close as you can get to Prime on Earth.
Atmosphere: Due (partially?) to the unusually high gravity, the planet has accumulated a very thin, densely-packed atmosphere. The chemical nature and thinness of the atmosphere produce virtually no radiation shielding, leading to extreme temperature differentials and constant irradiation of the surface with standard-type "cosmic-ray" wavelength energy, and with charged proton-stream flux encountered as the planet passes through its self-created radiation belts. This radiation is estimated at 500-800 millirem per square foot per hour of gamma-type radiation, and 50-100 millirem per square foot per hour of alpha-type radiation. Beta-type radiation is negligible.
Atmospheric Pressure: average 25.8 Atm, max 27.5 Atm, min 20.4 Atm.
Chemical Breakdown: | 56% Nitrogen |
20% Sulfur-containing compounds
18% Ammonia-containing compounds
4% Carbon Dioxide/Monoxides
>1% Oxygen and Ozones | |
<1% Water vapor, heavy metals, and particulates |
Climate: The unusual chemical nature of the atmosphere, in combination with the powerful magnetic fields which create and are created by the charged particle flux, create violent, unpredictable storms which can last from less than a minute to dozens of years. These storms can consist of winds in excess of 600 miles per hour, hailstones documented as large as 75 feet in diameter, with an average size of around 1 foot in diameter, driving chemical rains of sulfuric acids and ammonides with enough kinetic energy to shred metals, pressure drops of up to 5 Atm, violent electrical discharges, and drastic temperature flux (as much as 150 C difference over a half-hour period).
Temperatures range from the deep-freeze caused by storm pressure differentials during the cold night season, down to -70 C, to as much as 130 C during the hot season, a combination of greenhouse effect and unblocked radiation.
The atmosphere is unbreathable for standard Earth life-forms, due to its high content of sulfur and ammonia compounds and low oxygen levels. The native lungs are not only incredibly powerful and efficient, but designed to resist corrosion from both acidic and alkalide residues. In addition, metabolic pathways have been formed with alternate reduction agents in place of often scarce oxygen. Radiation resistance is partially achieved by hair and skin coloring which is white and shiny, almost mirror-like, in an attempt to reflect gamma-type radiation, and a thick metadermal layer which both absorbs radiation and sloughs rapidly, and provides extra insulation against temperature and pressure extremes and electrical discharge.
Geology: The planet is extremely tectonically active for unknown reasons, despite its unusually high gravity (average 48-50 G). Powerful magnetic flows in the planet's core are speculated causes and may be partially responsible for the unusual field of the planet and its particle flux attraction. The large and ever-increasing number of volcanoes and slow-vents contribute to the high sulfidity of the atmosphere, and to the thick particulate fog which limits visibility close to the surface in some areas. Earthquakes are common and few structures on the planet's surface are permanent in nature. The gravity field of the planet, accompanied by this constant shaking-down of standing structures, forces a relatively thin elevation differential, providing little cover from atmospheric dangers. This is broken only by the towering volcanoes themselves, which thrust outward under their considerable geothermal power, only to be slowly ground back down to the flat level. The planet is high in normally rare and unusual minerals, including a number of radioactives, and this may contribute both to the ambient radiation and toxin levels, and to the unstable planetary core. While low in "precious" metals such as silver, gold, platinum, copper, etc, the abundance of uranium, iron, titanium, mercury, and arsenic are markedly unusual.
Flora and Fauna: While this is mostly left to Aranae, I will note here the incredible competition exhibited by every species on this planet, from virus to human being. Every disease, every plant, every animal fights desperately to claim the rare elements necessary to sustain life, and to occupy those few areas of relative stability and safety from the planet itself. Omegans themselves are, according to the statistics I've gathered, known as being one of, if not the most, violent sentient races ever catalogued. Their entire society revolves around warfare and violent competition in the form of "games". Art and the humanities are virtually unknown and consistently treated with disrespect. The sciences are only tolerated as being necessary to develop more effcient warefare. Intelligence is valued only as a value to strategy and tactics. Warriors are valued above all others in society. The political system is sketchy at best, largely because no one is interested in politics. In fact, the entire society is one step away from complete individualistic anarchism, and only a preference for the more efficient killing of warfare over private battle continues the distinction. Omegans generally prefer their world to any other, and in the recent exploration of space (due to investigative probes by other races) have come to the racial realization that all other life forms are soft and weak, and that living among them can only lead to becoming soft in turn. Omegans see no value in killing other races, because there is no challenge. They can also see that their way of life would be threatened if the relative abundance of resources and space available to them in the universe was to be achieved, because then there would be no need to fight over anything.
