Matthew chapter 1 v6 - even NOW David's sin is not forgotten or covered or denied - Israel did not need to nor were they allowed to have "perfect" hero's - but rather a perfect God often served, loved and worshipped by terribly imperfect men and women - Hero's because of WHOM they worshipped; v1-17 - Jesus had as many villains in His family tree as He did hero's! some of the most despicable horrible wretched men in scripture are His ancestors - proving God does NOT need ANYTHING but His own PROMISE in order to make His will come to pass, even the greatest wickedness cannot overcome His plan to redeem and save us; NAY, not only NOT overcome it, He can withOUT trouble or extra effort WEAVE those dreadful black threads into His perfect tapestry of salvation; v17 - "14" 2 sets of a perfect "7" and a perfect set of "3" of those; this so called "primitive" people managed to keep track of over 43 generations of people spanning thousands of years; v19 - Joseph was a man who knew how to BALANCE righteousness and Mercy, a love FOR God's law and the love IN/OF God's law; v25 - no union UNTIL she gave birth - how CARELESS are the Romanists with their horrible "Maryology" chapter 3 v4-5 - although the vision of what Messiah was supposed to be had become muddled over the centuries, there remained at least some men who remembered what scripture said; yet how could they tell Herod this KNOWING what a monster he was?? Or did they not truly realize what manner of man he really was? Or did they, in their debauched cynical state, not really BELIEVE Messiah was really LIKELY? V8 - even Herod realized these guys weren't talking mere issues of human geopolitics, but rather one of DIVINE INCARNATION; Chapter 7 v24ff Key idea: NO MATTER how GOOD the materials are that the house is made of, IF the FOUNDATION is no good, the house can't hold together BY ITSELF when force is brought to bear against it it has to be able to REST upon a firm foundation; You CHOOSE the foundation on which you build; During peaceful times, both houses looked the same, but without a powerful foundation to absorb the punishment, the house alone can NOT hold itself together in the storm; buildings depend upon gravity to hold together, each part of the house resting upon that under it, so ULTIMATELY it is ALL resting upon the ground, the foundation - ultimately, THAT is what holds up the house!! to undestand the physics of house building, one must ask at every step, "what does THIS rest on?" - once you no longer can give an answer, you've reached the ULTIMATE source of support, the FINAL point of the buildings existance; everyone gets the same amount of gravity to hold their houses together, one piece upon the next, BUT it is the STORM FORCES that rage into us, if they pull out the foundation, the house collapses under it's OWN WEIGHT, it can no longer endure gravity, it can no longer hold up what's above, since all below has collapsed and fallen away; Chapter 13 v24-30 - WITH time, what 1st looked too similar to tell apart (weeds and crops), becomes increasingly more obviously different, as each begins to manifest more and more of their particular natures; chapter 14 v11-12 so John's body was never buried with his head; v13 it hurt Jesus both as God and as a man - a man who lost his friend and cousin v14 yet His compassion for others out weighed His own heart's grief... v16 an IMPOSSIBLE challenge! why put them in such an impossible and awkward place? to make SURE their focus of supply, their HOPE of deliverence would ALWAYS be Jesus! it wasn't to shame or humiliate them, it was to make them LEARN NOT to trust on their OWN selves, but to ALWAYS look to HIM; oddly enough, He was ABLE to TAKE their blatantly inadequate resources and abilities and make His miracles happen WITH them and THROUGH them; He could have "shazzamed" the food into being, but rather showed what is inadequate to them is MORE than enough IF THEY GIVE IT TO HIM; Jesus doesn't say to us "Be adequate"; He says instead "Don't be afraid of your limitations and inadequacies - they are MORE than enough fo ME to use to do the IMPOSSIBLE; Chap 17 v22-23 unable to understand His entire message, the disciples reacted to what they COULD understand - and it is precious and sweet that they GRIEVED for Him rather than selfishly FEARED for themselves; v24-27 here are 2 miracles - 1st that Jesus knew EXACTLY what had happened and that it troubled Peter - THEN that He showed GOD was able to provide Chap 18 v4 the child was totally dependent upon his father and KNEW it and LIVED OUT that truth in complete peace and trust without frustration or fear (unless his child-will came into conflict with his father's will...) v7 Sin is grevious enough, and to those who commit it, a sad and destructive thing - BUT to those who MARKET it, who feed OFF the sin they "sell" to others, God has an even more terrible destruction; v10 and we DO look down on them - we mock their innocence, devalue it with movies that have children cursing like sailors or gleefully pursuing the sins of adulthood - we even go so far as to say how GREAT it is that they have "become" a "man" or a "woman" a reference to guardian angels!? v14 God is NOT willing that ANY should be lost, but so many ARE! And HOW God must GRIEVE! v15-20 does this "church"look ahead to the body of Christ, or does it refer to a sort of koinania of the Kingdom? v20 one of the most magnificant promises in all scripture! v21-22 the implication is that even though the brother REFUSES to repent and therefore must be cast out of the fellowship, WE STILL MUST FORGIVE HIM; he cannot be treated as a "pagan or a tax collector" out of hatred for him - we MUST forgive him and do what we do OUT OF LOVE; we cast him out FIRST to separate ourselves from his sin lest WE become enticed and fall into it AND ALSO lest OTHERS take our apparant acceptance of him as an ENDORSEMENT of his sin; SECOND, to force the issue upon HIM of the seriousness of his sin - as chastisement NOT vengence; Chapter 21 22 "if you believe..." in what? in WHO? NOT believe in your PERSONAL ability to make magic by merely convincing yourself it is so - believe in HIM - in the Lord who does ALL things - therefore, because of THAT belief, you're not going to ask in prayer for something contrary to His will; 43 is Jesus "canceling" the Abrahamic and Davidic Covenents? transferring them to the Church? NO!! The Kingdom is GOD'S to those who obey and respond to His call, whether Jew or Gentile - but Abrahams Covenant HOLDS; Not ALL Israelites were EVER garuanteed automatic "safe passage" into the Kingdom - Israel AS A NATION WILL REMAIN INTACT as part of God's promise - BUT EACH INDIVIDUAL Israelite must enter the Kingdom the same way ALL of us must - EACH ONE on his OWN - in obedience to God's calling;
