Intro to my Beliefs
I suppose the time has come to update what it is that I believe and hold to be true.
Let's begin with what I am not. I am not a Wiccan, a Druid, a Satanist, a witch, a shaman or any of the thousand of other things one might assume. I am simply a Pagan. I do not do magick on a regular basis, I do not "do" circle, belong to a coven or dance naked. I don't think there is anything wrong with those things, I just chose not to do them.
So now we move on to what a "Pagan" is.
At one time, all faiths were, what is now, referred to as "pagan." That is, they were not Christian based faiths. All in all, Christianity is a fairly "new" religion. Druids and Buddhists, these are people of ancient beliefs. No doubt, someone has tried to convince you that Wicca was one of those "old/ancient" religions. They were lying to you! In 1951 a man named Gerald Gardner published his first book on witchcraft, and thus, Wicca was born. Witchcraft has been practiced, in one form or another, since (presumably) the days of the cavemen. Today there are people who lay claim to practicing "the old ways," but the truth is, that no one person knows how and what rituals were performed by those ancient witches and pagans. Today we can only grasp at what has come before us, and hope that what we do will bring us a positive result.
Paganism envelops many different faiths, Wicca is but one of them. Buddhism, Hinduism, Satanism, Taoism, Shamanism, Druidism--these are all Pagan beliefs. The word Pagan is defined as:
1) follower of a less popular religion; Someone who does not follow one of the world's major religions, especially someone who is not Christian, Muslim, or Jew, and who's religion is regarded as questionable. (sometimes considered offensive).
2) polytheist or pantheist; a follower of an ancient polytheistic or pantheistic religion.
3) heathen; somebody who has no religion (disapproving).
The word Pagan is derived from the Latin word Pagus, which means: rural district, village, and from the word Pagunus which means: country dweller.
Today's Pagans usually fall into category 1 or 2. Most are deeply spiritual people, and would take great offense to their religious beliefs being termed as "questionable" or as non existent (as in definition #3). Would you doubt a monk's faith, or for that matter, a nuns? I didn't think so. Anyhow, let us continue...
I define myself as Pagan because a) I do not believe nor hold true the words written in the Christian bible. I know that millions do hold these words to be true. "God" may very well have spoken these words, but he spoke them to man, and as we all know, man as a race, is prone to failure and interpretation. I also believe that much of the context should be given to the times in which these books were written. Alot has changed since that time. I believe that the Creator of us all (if such a being exists) would change along with us. I do not believe that I will be banished to hell for altering my body with tattoos or because I have pierced my ears, cut my hair, or wear unnatural fabrics. I do not believe that my uncle will go to hell because he was born as a gay man, or that my sister is a bastard because she was born to parents not married in the Catholic church. If there is a Hell, and I certainly don't think there is, then I will go there because of the bad things I have done or the pain I have caused others. Yes, I have issues with Christianity *lol*
Okay and onto b) I define myself as Pagan because I believe that there is a Creative Force/Being that is represented by many facets (God and Goddesses if you will). I don't believe that this being is male or female, but asexual. If there is a father, why can there not be a mother also? Are they not equal parts of the same being? There is no child without a male and female parent, it's simple biology people :)
c) I BELIEVE IN EVOLUTION!!!!
d) I lack the testicular fortitude (and patience) to become Buddhist. *lol*
As Einstein said :"Science without Religion is lame, Religion without Science is Blind."
Be Blessed!!!
