Robert Burns - born on 25 January 1759 in Alloway, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland; married Jean Armour, daughter of James Armour and Mary Smith, in April 1788 in Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland. He died on 21 July 1796 in Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, Scotland, at age 37.

Jean Armour was born on 16 February 1765 in Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland. She died on 26 March 1834 in Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, Scotland, at age 69. In addition to their own children, Jean raised Robert's illegitimate daughter Betty (born in 1791 to Ann Park), and in later years her granddaughter Sarah Burns whose mother, Betty, had died in childbirth.

Robert Burns had a total of fourteen known children by four women, including nine by his wife Jean Armour. Eight of his children were illegitimate, including the first four by Jean Armour before they were married in 1788.

Elizabeth Paton was born in September 1760 in Largieside, Ayrshire, Scotland. She married John Andrew on 9 February 1788. She died between 1793 and 1798. Elizabeth "Betsey" Paton was employed as a female servant on the Burnes farm at Lochlie during the winter of 1783-84, but returned to her own home when the Burnes family moved to Mossgiel in March 1784. However, Robert apparently returned to visit her since their daughter Elizabeth (Bess) was born 22 May 1785. Betsey subsequently married John Andrew, a farm labourer, and they had four children. A year later Betsey had a son by Robert Burns named Robert Patton Burns.

What we know of Robert Burn's descendents...of Jean's children, six died young and another, William, had no children. The last descendant of their eldest son Robert ( 1786-1857) was Jean Armour Burns Brown, who died in 1937. All living descendants of Robert Burns and Jean Armour descend from their granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Maitland Tombs Burns (1821-1909) and John Shaw Burns b 1825-1921, daughter and son of their fourth son James Glencairn Burns (1794-1865). Many of Robert Burns descendants are from his illegitimate children: 1. Elizabeth "Bess" Burns (1785-1816), daughter of Elizabeth "Betsey" Patton, who married John Bishop in 1807. 2. Robert Patton Burns 1786 - son of Elizabeth "Betsey" Paton, who married John Bishop in 1807. 3. Elizabeth "Betty" Burns (1791-1873), daughter of Ann Park, who married John Thomson in 1808. 4. Robert Burns son of Janet "Jennie" Clow. He was born in Edinburgh in 1788 and later became a merchant in London.
