Karma
Most followers of a magickally related belief system believe in and accept the concept of Karmic Return. The most common Karmic Return Law, in my experience, is The Law of Threefold Return. Simply put it states that everything you do will return to you three times as strong as you sent it out. In other words if you commit an evil act, it will eventually return to you in a form that will be (to you) three times worse. Likewise if you do good deeds they will, eventually, return to you three times as strong. I believe in karmic return, however, I have a few problems with The Law of Threefold Return as I understand it.
1. The Laws of Nature state that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In my humble opinion karma and magick are both natural forces therefore they are subject to The Laws of Nature. Therefore how is it that your acts are revisited upon you stronger than they were when you sent them force. Is there some kind of multiplying force out there through which everything passes?
2. What or whom determines whether an act is good or evil? The Wiccan Rede states "An it harm none, do as ye will." And I do believe that this is a very good thing to live by. But is there such a thing as an evil or good act? Or is the evilness/goodness determined by the intent of the person and not the content of the act. For example, a Witch sends forth healing energy to help a friend at their request. This is a good act. However the end result may be that this energy merely prolongs this friend's life so that they suffer in pain longer than they would have without it. Is it still an act of kindness because it was intended to be kind, or has it now become evil because it prolonged the friends suffering? What kind of karmic return is the result of this act?
