Rose Beads

These instructions come from Godey's Lady's Book

1/2 pound (226 g) fresh rose petals
1/4 pound (113 g) fine salt
1/2 ounce (15 ml) each
     Cloves
     Allspice

Pound the ingredients together in a mortar or grind them in a meat or grain grinder.  Shape into balls, sliding a thick needle or toothpick through the centre for a hole.  They will shrink and dry in a few days and continue to harden with age.  When very hard, they can be polished with vegetable oil.
(If your rose petals are not moist enough to form balls, boil them in a small amount of water first.)
