Rosa Emilia Jacintho Bicho
Rosa Emilia Jacintho Bicho was born on the island of Flores in May of 1861. She was the daughter of Antonio J. Bicho and Maria J. Almeida Bicho. She was one of five children. Her brothers were Ventura, John, Antonio and Joseph.All came to America and eventually settled in Providence, Rhode Island.Rosa married Francisco da Costa in the Azores. He died before 1900. Many members of Rosa's family and her husband's family emigrated from their native Flores. By the year 1892, when Rosa, her widowed mother Maria and her two children , Mary and Alfred arrived, they had an extended family to welcome them. They settled on Blanding Street in the Fox Point section of Providence. At that time, many Portuguese had come to settle there. The neighborhood had been predominately Irish since 1850, but most of the Irish had moved on, and the neighborhood now, at the turn of the century was mostly Azorean. The first record on which the family appears is the 1900 census. Rosa was a widow, age 39. Her mother Maria Bicho was 65. Rosa was a dressmaker. There are no other records of Rosa and her mother, Maria. Rosa died on February 4, 1908 at her home on Blanding Ave. She was 47 years old. She is buried in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI. Her mother, Maria J. Bicho died on March 8, 1910 and is buried with her daughter.
