Maria Jacintho Almeida
Maria
Maria Jacintho Almedia was born on the island of Flores in 1834. She was the daughter of
Manuel J. and Mary A. Almeida. About the year 1855, Mary married Antonio J. Bicho. They became the parents of at least five children, Rosa, Antonio, Ventura, John and Joseph.
In 1892, Maria, a widow, emigrated to America with her daughter Rosa and her children
Alfred and Mary. Maria's four sons were recent immigrants to Rhode Island.
The family settled on Blanding Street in the Fox Point section of Providence. At that time, many Portuguese had come to settle there. The neighborhood had been predominately Irish since 1850, but most of the Irish had moved on, and the neighborhood now at the turn of the century was mostly Azorean.
The first record on which the family appears is the 1900 census. Rosa was listed as a widow, age 39. Her mother Maria Bishee [Bicho] was 65. Alfred was 17. Her son Joseph Bicho, and his two year old daughter, Julia, were living with them.
In 1908 Rosa died. Two years later, on March 8, 1910, Maria passed away.
She is buried with her daughter Rosa in Saint Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
