The kernel
- The kernel is the core of the operating system. It is responsible for performing the following functions:
Managing devices, memory, processes and daemons.
Controlling the functions (transmition of information) between the system programs (utilities) and the system hardware.
Scheduling and executing all commands.
Managing Swap Space.
- The Shell is an interface between the user and the kernel. It acts as an interpreter or translator of commands. The shell accepts commands issued by you, interprets what you type and then sends the executable to the kernel. The diagram below shows the relationship between the Shel, Kernel and the system hardware.
