The old newspaper


They were having a late breakfast after enjoying the luxury of sleeping in on a Saturday morning. He picked up the remote to the small t v on the dining room counter and turned to the local news channel. They conversed about the days plans until something on the news caught both their attention’s.

“Another in a string of brutal slayings took place

Just last night in the Wellington district….”said the

lady newscaster

“That’s our neighborhood!” exclaimed his wife.

“It’s the same M O as the others” said the Police Investigator

At the taped off crime scene. “It’s always in the late afternoon

And always couples in urban neighborhoods. Details are sketchy at this point. All we know for sure is that the subject

Is a white male, drives an older ford van and is thought to be wearing a repair mans type uniform. Anyone with information who may have seen suspicious activity is urged to call you’re local crime unit with details…….”


They both looked at each other in a state of shock. ”Do you think….’ his wife started to say

“Yeah…. “ he replied

“But what would have stopped him here?” his wife pondered aloud

“The rose…” he said as they both recalled the event as he had relayed it to her last night. “To protect you from evil…” he recalled aloud.

They both sprang from their chairs at once and ran to the living room and stopped in their tracks as they both saw that the vase in the curio cabinet was empty. They slowly approached the glass case as if stalking a dangerous animal. There by the vase was a folded newspaper page. She gently opened the glass door and withdrew the yellowed paper from the shelf.

“This is over thirty years old “she said. “It’s an obituary column.

The body of “Rose” Mary Wells was found yesterday in the abandoned Lynch building where she had apparently had been living. There are no known relatives. She was best known by most of the downtown office workers as ‘Rosemary’ , a street vendor who sold beautiful roses to the office workers. She claimed they had powers to protect from evil. She will be missed by many.


The couple stared at one another for an intense moment.

“I have a call to make.” he said

“I’ll get you the phone.” she replied
