Desk Caddy
After having made my last project (Vinny's Kitchen Organizer), my wife asked if I could adapt the design somehow and make a project for her that she could use at work, which would help organize her desk.
I borrowed heavily from my friend Vinny's design and came up with this project which I call a Desk Caddy. It will keep paper clips, staple removers and anything else that will fit in the two small drawers, pens and pencils neatly organized and yet handy in the two divided sections at the rear of the top. I also made a section at the front of the top to hold business cards.
The unit is about 5" X 5" X 11" tall and is made from 1/2" solid red oak. I got some 1" oak boards which had about 3 coats of brown paint on them from a business renovation I came upon. They were headed for the dump till I asked for them. After checking carefully for any nails or staples, I ran them through my new planer and ended up with some beautiful 1/2" oak stock.
All interior dividers were made from 1/4" red oak and rest in dados cut into the inside of the sides, and the back was set into 1/2" X 1/4"D rabbetts cut all around. The drawers made from 1/2" poplar playwood, have fronts made from some more of the 1/4" oak stock. All exposed edges were rounded over prior to assembly with my 1/8th inch roundover bit using my router.
The unit was given 3 coats of varathane from a spray can product by Flecto.. Then for the finishing touch, 2 brass knobs for the drawers from Lee Valley.
