Katheri Deftera
(Clean Monday)
2 March
We went on a picnic with Nikos, Thekla and Dimitri
up the mountain and flew our kites (traditional).
We ate the traditional foods for today:
Octopus, olives, a special bread made only on Clean Monday,
Ouzo, and Halvas for desert.
Clean Monday is a mix between Ash Wednesday and Fat Tuesday.
One dresses for Carnival and eats for Lent.
On our way up the mountain (the mountain that separates Greece from Bulgaria)
we found some free-range horses.  Cows are not plentiful, and
many Greeks eat horse meat  *wrinkling nose*
