THE CONTINUING ADVENTURE

EPISODE 1

"STAR'S DILEMMA"

By Cyberwulfe

Setting: Approximately three days after the movie Balto. Steele has been exiled from Nome and now lives in the woods. Balto now lives at Rosy's house with Jenna. Nikki, and Kaltag still hang around with each other but Star has other things he'd rather do....

Scene 1: Star's house. There is a hole in one of the walls outside. Star walks out of one of these and yawns, then stretches. He walks to the edge of the house and sees Jenna, Sylvie, and Dixie walking past. He ducks back behind the house and peeks around the corner.
Jenna: It's great! Balto is really being accepted in town now, especially at home.
Sylvie: Well no wonder. If I had found the lost sled team I'd be more popular too!
Jenna: But Sylvie, you're one of the most popular dogs in Nome.
Sylvie: Oh yeah! I almost forgot. Besides, why would I want to go out in that awful weather anyway?
Dixie: Those dogs are bred for long runs in the cold. We're bred to win dog beauty shows. (She holds her head up and lets the sun reflect off her gold collar)
Jenna: And you've certainly had your share of those.
Dixie: Oh just a few.
The dogs laugh and continue on. Star watches Dixie as she and the others disappear behind another building. He sighs and walks in the front doggy-door for breakfast (getting a bit stuck on the way in!)

Scene 2: Rosy's house Balto is eating dog food in a bowl with his name on it. Jenna comes in and nuzzles him.
Balto: Out for a walk?
Jenna: Yes. I still have my other friends too.
Balto: Of course. (He continues to eat)
Jenna: Uh, Balto.
Balto: Mmm hmm (with his mouth full)
Jenna: Star was watching us again. I think he's interested in Dixie.
Balto: (swallows) Oh really? Well, she sure got over Steele quickly. Star would have a chance in going out with her.
Jenna: I don't even want to talk about Steele! I'm glad he left!
Balto: Me too. Maybe I should talk to Star about it.
Jenna: Not yet. Wait a while. We'll see what develops.
Balto: Fine with me.
Jenna is given a bowl by Rosy's mother and she begins to eat also.

Scene 3: The old mill. Nikki and Kaltag are still talking about the adventure.
Kaltag: Man, I thought we'd bought it. If Balto didn't show up when we did, we'd be frozen pup-sicles.
Nikki: (Laughing) Now dere's one I've not heard in a while. I'm glad to be back home. I've still got a stash of bones hidden somewhere, but I'm not telling where.
Kaltag: I've been thinking. (He grabs a nearby bone) Star hasn't spent a lot of time with us, has he. Nikki: Not really. Can you blame him? He was pretty scared, even more than usual.
Kaltag: Now can you honestly say you weren't scared?
Nikki: Well.... (turning away slowly)
Kaltag: Exactly! It's gotta be something else. But what.
Nikki: Look. There he is!
Star squeezes through a hole in the wall and walks over to the boiler. He sits for a while and the waves at Nikki and Kaltag. They wave back and look at each other.
Kaltag: He can't be too tired from the run.
Nikki: Then what is it?
Dixie walks in and sits in front of the boiler, right next to Star. Star freezes up and falls over. Dixie looks at him then walks over to the pile of bones and chooses a small one.
Nikki/Kaltag: (both together) Ah ha!

Scene 4: The dogs all meet behind the hospital that night. Balto, Jenna, Nikki, Kaltag, and Sylvie. Balto: I think you all know why we're here.
Nikki:: Yeah. Star has a crush on Dixie. (he laughs to himself)
Jenna: I think it's nice. He's a very lonely dog.
Kaltag: He's pretty fearful and nervous.
Balto: That's because you're always hitting him on the head!
Kaltag: Good point. (he looks at Nikki)
Nikki: I kinda feel sorry for him too, dere.
Sylvie: I don't know about Dixie. I've known her for a long time and she doesn't look like she even knows Star exists.
Kaltag: Just today she sat right next to him in the old mill. He fainted and she just walked by like nothing happened.
Jenna: We've got to let her know how nice Star is without making a fool out of him or Dixie.
Balto: We could set up a race between me and Star. I could lose and Dixie would see how great Star is.
Sylvie: That wouldn't work. She knows you're the fastest dog in Nome.
Kaltag: How about a spelling contest against me.
Jenna: No. You know every word in the english language! You couldn't lose.
Sylvie: It would have to be something that Star was good at. Something he can do well at.
Jenna: I've got it. We'll set up a dangerous situation and get Dixie to walk through it. Then Star would come to the rescue.
Balto: Would it work? Star isn't the rescuing type.
Jenna: Well.... you could try to save her first, then fail. Then Star would see his opportunity and rush to help her.
Nikki: Just one thing, dere.
All together: What?
Nikki: Star can't stand near her or he passes out.
All: Oh. ( They drop their heads)
Sylvie: Maybe we should just leave it and see how it works out on its own.

Scene 5: Front Street, the next morning. Jenna and Balto are waiting outside the hospital for Rosy. Jenna: I hope the doctor doesn't keep her for long this time, my paws are starting to get sore.
Balto: That's where big paws are a bad thing. They hurt even more.
Suddenly a loud noise startles them. An all-terrain jeep roars down the street and stops in front of the carpenter shop. A man and a dog get out. The man goes inside the shop as the dog approaches Balto and Jenna. He is a Malamute ( the same breed as Dixie. Oooh! The plot thickens).
Jack: Hello there. My name is Jack. How are you today?
Jenna: Just fine. Hello Jack, my name is Jenna and this is Balto.
Jack: Hello. Glad to meet all of you. I'm from down south. My master just flew in this morning. I hope you don't mind the jeep. It seems the best way of getting around, why it really helped in the war.
Balto: You were in the war?
Jack: No, actually my master was a pilot, and a darn good one I must say. He bought me a few years after the war ended and he retired. He still hangs onto his old Snipe though.
Jenna: Snipe?
Jack: The Sopwith Snipe. The best fighter plane the British ever made. My master's den is just full of pictures, plane parts, and awards. He's got something called a Victoria Cross. Quite beautiful I must say, he even made a smaller replica and put it on my collar.
Jack raises his chin to show off his own little VC.
Balto: That must be a great honour to share with your master.
Jack: Oh believe me it is. Uh.. do any of you have any awards or titles. My master is a retired Captain!
Jenna: Well, Balto just rescued the town from an epidemic. I guess you could call him a hero.
Balto: (in low, quiet voice) Thanks Jenna.
She swats him with her tail. Then there is a whistle. The dogs look over to the carpenter shop. Jack's master is waiting by the jeep.
Jack: Well, got to go. My master just bought a spare prop. They really don't fix themselves now do they? I hope to see you soon.
Jenna: Of course.
Balto: Good bye.
Jack walks away and jumps in the jeep. The jeep roars away. Dixie walks up to Jenna and Balto. Dixie: Who was that hot dog?
Balto and Jenna look at each other.
Both: Oh no!

(Commercial)

Jenna: Uh, that was Jack. He's here with his master. He just arrived this morning in his master's Snoop.
Balto: I think it was called a Swipe.
Dixie: Whatever. How long is he here for?
Jenna: I don't know. He didn't say.
Dixie: Do you know where he lives?
Balto: He didn't say that either.
Dixie: Well, the next time you see him, ask. OK? Bye.
Dixie walks off leaving Balto and Jenna alone.
Jenna: I think we've got a problem.
Balto: You can say that again.
Jenna: I think we've got a problem.

Scene 6: Star's house. In the back part where Star sleeps. Star is looking at a piece of broken glass that is acting as a mirror. He's trying different poses trying to impress himself. Balto sticks his head inside.
Balto: You're beautiful (smiling sarcastically)
Star: Oh! Balto. I didn't hear you come in.
Balto: I was just wondering if you'd like to go with a few of us to welcome the new dog in town. Star: Who's that? (he walks over to Balto)
Balto: His name's Jack. He just flew in this morning with his master.
Star: Sounds like fun. Will there be any food?
Balto: I think so...
Star: Great!
Balto:.. probably gifts for Jack.
Star: Oh, darn. Who.. else will be there? (Star looks at the mirror and grins)
Balto: Um, me, Jenna, Nikki, Kaltag, Sylvie, Dixie...
There is a thumping sound. Balto looks and sees Star lying on the floor.
Balto: Great!

Scene 7: A house on the outskirts of town. A small airstrip is nearby with an airplane on it. The jeep is parked beside the house. The dogs are gathered behind the house.
Jenna: On behalf of all of the dogs of Nome I'd like to welcome you to our town.
The dogs cheer.
Jack: Well I really don't know what to say. Thank you. And these bones look lovely.
Star is drooling right next to them.
Star: Yeah. Lovely.
Dixie walks over to Jack. She is carrying something in her mouth. She drops it near Jack. It's a small carving made of ice.
Dixie: I hope you like it. I made it myself.
Jack: It's just wonderful! I've never seen craftsmanship like this before. Where did you learn it? Dixie: I've always liked to make stuff. I guess it just comes naturally for me. (she smiles)
Jack: So does beauty. You are an amazing creature...uh?
Dixie: Oh, Dixie. I'm sorry. I should have introduced myself.
Jack: No, my fault. I should have asked.
Star is watching. He sadly turns and walks back to Nome. He slips through the hole in his wall, lays down, sheds a few tears, and then falls asleep.

Scene 8: The next day, Dixie and Jack are going for a walk in the woods.
Dixie: What is it like in England, Jack?
Jack: It's very nice. You'd like it there. I only wish I could take you.
Dixie: Why couldn't you? Jack: I'm only here for a short time. You see, my master is in a very bad business. There are a few men looking for us. That's why we needed the spare propeller. They tried to shoot us down.
Dixie gasps.
Dixie: Were you hurt?
Jack: Of course not! My master was one of the top flying aces of the war, remember? He shot down those planes in less than a minute.
Dixie: But why don't you run away?
Jack: I can't. I don't know a lot about human writing but whatever it is that those men want is engraved on the back of my collar.
Dixie: Why don't you just take it off and leave it?
Jack: I can't. I'm honour bound and sworn to carry the Victoria Cross until I die. And the way things have been happening, it may be very soon.
Dixie puts her head on his shoulder.
Dixie: No! It won't happen! We'll protect you.
Jack: I'm afraid there's nothing you can do. I had better go now. Good bye.
Jack runs off leaving a teary eyed Dixie alone in the woods.

(Commercial)

Scene 9: Dixie is walking with Jenna.
Dixie: And he says that these men are trying to kill him.
Jenna: That's horrible! We've got to help him.
Dixie: We can't. He said there's nothing we can do. I want to do so much!
Jenna: Here comes Balto. Maybe he'll have an idea.
Balto walks up to the two dogs.
Balto: Hi guys. What's up?
Jenna: Jack's in a lot of trouble.
Balto: Why? What did he do?
Dixie: Not him. It's his master. He's got something someone else wants and they're willing to kill him for it.
Balto: Do you know what it is?
Jenna: It has something to do with whatever is written on the back of Jack's collar.
Balto: His collar?
Dixie: That's why his master gave him the medal. To hide the secret of whatever he's stolen.
Balto: We've got to find out what is on it. But how. I can't read.
Jenna: No. But we know someone who does..

Scene 10: That evening at Kaltag's house.
Kaltag: You want me to try to read it.
Balto: You do know a little bit of writing don't you.
Kaltag: A bit isn't everything.
Dixie: Please!
Kaltag: OK. I'll try. But I'm making no promises.
Dixie: Thank you! (she kisses Kaltag on the cheek and runs to get Jack)
Kaltag: Do you really want me to read it. After all, aren't we trying to get Star and Dixie together? Jenna: That's not the point. Whether you read it or not Jack is still leaving. then we can try again. Balto: She'll be back soon. We'd better not talk about it anymore.
Kaltag: Good idea.
Then Dixie arrives with Jack.
Kaltag: Now hold up your collar and I'll try to read it.
Jack flips up his collar to reveal the back of it.
Kaltag: It's a good thing your master wrote it upside-down. Now that the collar is upside-down the words are right-side-up.
Dixie: What does it say?
Kaltag: Hold on. (he looks at the writing for a few seconds) A-hah!
Jenna: What?
Kaltag: It's a formula.
Balto: Formula?
Kaltag: For some sort of secret metal. I can see the symbol for iron and few others. Very interesting. I don't know what it it though.
Jack: My master often talks about a strong metal that can withstand bullets, but is as thin as a piece of cardboard.
Jenna: He probably wants it for his plane.
Jack: Or for someone else.
Dixie: What if they come looking for it.
Jack: I hope they don't.
There is a loud cracking sound. Two boards in the wall are pulled back. There are three men, one of them has a bag.
Man 1: There's the mutt!
Man 2: Bag him!
The man with the bag covers Jack with the bag and tries to run away. Balto growls and runs after him. Jenna and Kaltag jump on the other two men. The loud noise attracts the attention of Kaltag's owner who comes running around the side of the building.
Owner: Hey! You!
Man 1: Let's get out of here!
The two men get up and run away.
Jenna: Where's Balto?
Kaltag: Here he comes.
Balto: He had one of those jeeps and got away.
Dixie: You mean they still have Jack.
Balto: Yes. I'm sorry Dixie.
Dixie sobs and runs away. Star arrives to see what was going on.
Star: What happened?
Jenna: A man just dog-napped Jack.
Star: You're kidding!
Kaltag: Now why would we kid about that?
Star: I don't know. Where's Dixie. She's always hanging around that dog. Maybe they got her too! Jenna: No she's fine. Just a bit broken up that's all.
Star: That's good.
Kaltag: Why? Star: Well... I wouldn't want one of my friends taken away, that's all.
Balto: Of course not.

Scene 11: The next morning. Balto, Star, and Jenna are waiting outside Jack's house.
Balto: Why are we here again?
Jenna: You saw that strange man put that piece of paper on the door didn't you Star?
Star: Yeah. This morning.
The door opens. Jack's owner comes out.
Owner: Oh! Hello dogs.
He pats them then looks at his door.
Owner: What's this?
The dogs move closer as Jack's master reads the message.
Owner: Attention Mr. Beeson, If you ever want to see your dog again come alone to the narrows in the eastern mountain at three o'clock this afternoon. Bring the formula for ZX-27 and come alone. They've got my Jack! I'll kill 'em! He runs back inside and slams the door.
Balto: Oh no!

To be continued....

What a great way to end the first episode!

I'm working on the next episode and I hope to have a lot more done. If you would like to help by writing an episode for the series, please feel free to send it in. *Make sure you have read all previous episodes to date so you don't make something happen that could not because of a missing character, ect. You are free to introduce any new characters, but you cannot kill any existing characters*.
