The LONG AWAITED preview to Heritage of the Wolf is here!!!
This is a small preview that I decided to release after drawing a cool picture from the scene posted here. More previews may follow, but I seriously doubt it. I can't give away too much of my story. By the time I'm finished doing that you'd have read most of it and you wouldn't want to buy it when I get it published.
Here it is, enough chatting! An excerpt from Chapter 15 (out of 17):
Characters:
Balto
Jenna
Steele
Steele's son, Remmington
Balto's children, Ace and Mishka
Intro: During the course of the story, Balto was bitten by a rabid wolverine and is now running wild. The dogs have a plan that they hope will catch Balto. We pick up here with Balto surrounded by the dogs, as well as a wolf pack who have come to help.
Balto leaped onto the wolf and began biting him. The wolf yelped and tried to run but Balto was too fast. The wolf lay still on the snowy ground. Balto stood over him, licking his lips," Who's next?"
"I am," said a voice from behind.
They all turned around. They could barely see Steele standing in the light of the lantern. The colours faded in and out on his black and white fur. Remmington was standing with him.
"I've been waiting quite a while for this Balto," said Steele.
"At least you're a worthy opponent Steele!" growled Balto.
Jenna ran up to Steele," Steele! What the heck do you think you're doing?"
"I'm saving you all," said Steele.
"Let Kemo fight, he'll win. Besides, he has nothing against Balto and will try not to hurt him. But you still keep your anger buried deep inside. Please Steele. Don't do it. For my sake?"
Steele looked at Jenna then at Balto. He was primed for action. He looked back into Jenna's desperate eyes," Sorry Jenna. But don't worry, I'll go easy on him."
He passed her and walked toward Balto. Jenna didn't turn around. She just hung her head and sobbed. Steele entered the familiar circle of fighters. Whenever a fight erupted between two sled dogs, the other dogs would form a circle to await the result: who would win, and who would lie bleeding on the snow.
"Hi Mishka," said Remmington, walking up to her. He had followed his father out of town, hoping that Mishka had joined whatever was going on in the woods. He walked up and sat right next to her.
"Hi. Sorry we had to meet in such a situation," she replied, then glanced at her father with a concerned look.
"When this is all over, remind me to invite you over to my place for some bones."
Ace walked over and squeezed in between Mishka and Remmington," Shouldn't you be doing something... else?!" he said.

"Yeah," replied Remmington. He put his paw on Ace's nose and shoved him back, then he sat closer to Mishka," I'm gonna sit here with Mishka and watch my dad beat the stuffing out of yours!" Ace bristled, but then sat down and grinned," You've got guts, Rem, I'll give you that much. But we'll see who beats who!" |
Mishka smiled and nuzzled Remmington. He stole a glance at Ace who only glared back at him. Remmington still hated Ace for being too protective of his sister, but now that he had stood up for himself he knew that Ace would slowly back off and leave the two of them alone. He sat down on his tan haunches and watched as the fight started.
