Here are a few photos of people from the 93 season at Piddington. |
Area "E"
This was the first year in the newly opened area to the right of the main villa building. I got stuck with
a little triangle of site right next to the chemical toilets - Mmmmm. Alex the Pole, a Dutch Guy and Mel
were my entire team for the fortnight. I seem to remember Cicely and Lara working in Area E too but don't
seem to have any photos of them working (how odd!).
Area "L"
Mark on the otherhand had the square bang in the middle of the site and Amanda and Felicity. There was a
rumour that after the majority of the team had left for the pub she decided to have a wash and stripped out
of her swimming costume in the middle of the campsite much to the delight of those who had stayed behind.
Well there's so much going on at Pidd I guess you can't always be in the right place at the right time.
Other Areas
Kat and Steve managed to find themselves an interesting area and managed to uncover a tile kiln this year.
It had been covered by a dump of roof tiles and was actually made from the old hypocaust of the building.
So there was some interesting archaeology that year. Lee on the other hand - and typically - managed to get
stuck out in the back end of beyond with nothing but rubble and the glare of the sand dunes to keep him
amused.
Dutch
These are the Dutch people who came this year. They were very strange and spent most of their time
building a tower out of stones found around the site. They came back in '94 just for a flying visit, not
to see any of us but to look at their creation. The one on the left thought that we were digging too slowly
and should call in the mechanical digger. He spent many hours telling us about his digs back in the
Netherlands and how they got the JCB and "Crash we dug into a layer of pottery."
Games and Food and Other Stuff
Of course it wasn't all work, work, work. There was always time for Tea, Cereal and Bourbon biccys. Not to
mention the unfeasibly large number of games that Andy managed to cram into his rucksack. Othello I seem
to recall was a particular favourite this year. Fran (Pidd '91 - '92) put in a brief appearance this year
(ex-girlfriend from '91) to cheer us all up.
General Silliness
Naturally silliness reared it's head. Andy and Lee spent some time thinking up tableaux for themselves and
a parrot on a stick (no don't ask me I really do not know), James thought it would be amusing to be a
talking tent (you can be the judge of that) and Mark and I simply could not resist surfing on the huge
pipeline that was being layed through the adjacent field. Steve (the one who was always asleep) discovered
the king of the potato people (a stone shaped like a potato) and so began its 10 day reign. Sadly as
Piddington drew to a close the king grew ill and died and so was given a state funeral and his grave marked
in best Latin "Hic Jacet Spud Rex".
