* Saarang: An update * Election fever * Calls from the nether-world * Change of guard * Is it infectious? * Money has stopped talking and how! SAARANG - AN UPDATE This year the pro-shows that were held were -Zakir Hussain (no prizes for guessing that one),K Vaidyanathan (violin) and Shivamani (drums) -Light Music by Musiano -Parikrama's Rock show -This year we also had the premiere of the movie "Conspiracy Theory".
Except for Zakir Hussain none of the pro-shows were really good. There was a huge turnout for Parikrama with the OAT being almost full to the brim. But the show started late and did not live up to the general expectation. There were fire-works at end of the show, however the rockets and other stuff was launched from the terrace of Narmada with the result that the guys who came to the show could not see the fire-works at all while the guys who stayed back in their rooms could!
This year breaking away from tradition we had a fashion show which was euphemistically called 'A Festival of Dresses'. I (Coolki) had a ring-side view as I was right under the ramp clicking away to glory and as such enjoyed it more than the others. However, all in all it was quite decent.
Though Saarang managed to generate a lot of sponsorship (amount as yet undisclosed) it did not have the same flavour as there were quite a few organising hiccups. For one the venue of the Informal's was shifted due to which it hardly attracrted any crowd. Also the events were not scheduled properly with most of the events exceeding the alloted time.
THE BOMB-SHELL- According to our sources it has been proposed in the meeting of the Steering committee that from next year onwards Saarang would not be sponsored and each student would have to pay 250/- towards the fest. It is believed that by the authorities that this would increase student participation. What is a cul-fest without hard-sell???
ELECTION FEVER Institute: This year the pg's have been considerably active .One of them (from Narmada) is standing for the post of the insti Gen-Sec. The other contestant in the fray is a ug (Kama), also from Narmada and the election for this post is as such a battle between the ug's and the pg's.
The cul-sec post has gone unopposed (except for a very ephemeral resistance) to LTTE (Godav) and Jumbo (Alak).
For the post of sports sec. SANDO (present Jam Sports Sec.) is standing against Dicks (Mandak). It is generally believed that this is going to be a cake-walk for Sando.
Bebbe (present Jam Gen. Sec.) is standing for the post of Hostel Affairs Sec and has an opponent from Alak.
Nari (present Jam Mess sec.) is standing for the post of AAS. The AAS elections are eveny tipped with three candidates in the fray (the others being from Mandak and Godav).
HOSTEL: Gen. sec- Bond, Pete and Suman Lit. sec- Shaggy Sports sec- Mabbu and Pantalu Mess sec- Manju SOC sec - Adarsh and Kolar SAC sec - no takers as yet!
The elections are to be held on the 16th of March. We will inform you about the results as soon as they are out.
CALLS FROM THE NETHER-WORLD from the various IIM's (6-A, 9-B,C&L) Nitrous, Pisku, Bhas, Bhavani, Kaja, AP, Moods, Chiku, Nikhil and also Aruna.
CHANGE OF GUARD Dean (Students) Prof. P S Rao is shifting out and in his place we have the present CCW Prof. B. Vishwanathan. As the new CCW we will have Prof Shivaprasad.
Also, besdies Dean (students), Dean (Academic Research) and also Dean (IC&SR) are vacating their posts.
IS IT INFECTIOUS ? The warden of Ganga has initiated new rules in the hostel. It seems that nobody can go to Taram's and if anybody does want to go to Quark after 11 o'clock he has to enter his name in the register that has been kept with the Security. Also if more than 3 guys want to talk they cannot do so in the confines of their room but must go to the Common room! If more than 15 guys want to chat they have to go to the mess!! Also the rooms are subject to cleanliness-scritiny by the warden.
We at Jam hope that whatever it is, it is not infectious.
MONEY HAS STOPPED TALKING AND HOW It has been decided by the authorities not to give prize money at the institute level any more as they feel that students take part in the events only for the money. They plan to give a dinner (eeks!) to the winners.
