Y2K!!! A REAL CONCERN?: HMMM!!!
There's a lot of concern revolving around Y2K, the exit of this 1900 millenium and the entrance of the new year, 2000 AD, in the field of electronic signal communication in the microcomputer industry. Is it important that the computer clock shows 01/01/1900, 01/01/2000, or 01/01/00? Well, from my point of view, a computer must synchronize, otherwise, it crashes. The hardware must communicate with the software and vice versus. Modern operating systems software acknowledges the year 2000, but it's possible the hardware BIOS chip had the '19' "burned in" at the factory, which won't change to '20'. The timing factor is very vital to system functioning. Suppose the software acknowledges the year 2000 as it turns over into the new century and the hardware considers 1900. There's a miscommunication when your software is called up. Think of scheduled reports, accounts, etc.

Think if your software and hardware turned over to 1900. Scheduled reports, accounts, etc that didn't exist in 1900 could probably be deleted from the system, due to the storage media and computer memory. Possible lawsuits in some cases may result and possible income immediately cancelled, the paperwork and backup reinputs could be very costly in any case.

I prefer safety than sorrow.
By any means, the expense comparison could be well worth the update. From a PC standalone perspective, unnetworked, the problem may only be personal. But, through access to networks remotely to access the Internet, a system crash may result if there's a synchronization problem. By all means, I think it is well worth the investment to have your system at least checked, for the 'bug', because microcomputers are international and will remain for a long time, and will become more and more essential in our daily lives, as already indicated.
