The Medoc
Official Classification of 1855
This classification was made in 1855 by a group of wine brokers in Bordeaux, who divided the 62 leading vineyards into five ranks, and rated the vineyards in descending order within each rank. Numbers in parentheses represent an updating of the list based on the best modern opinion of authorities in Bordeaux; each number corresponds to the division of the classification to which, it is now felt, the vineyard would belong if reclassified today. For example, Château Palmer would move from third growth to second; Château Kirwan would move from third to fifth. The symbol [X] means the vineyard no longer exists; the symbol [*] means the wine is no longer château-bottled; [B] indicates that the vineyard should be reduced to crus bourgeois, below the fifth rank but a highly honourable classification in itself.

| The following Médoc châteaux, listed in alphabetical order, are selected from among the many vineyards of the crus bourgeois because they have proved so outstanding over the past decades that they deserve to be ranked with the fifth growths of the 1855 classification. |
