In 1992, a multi-level system of higher education was introduced in Russia. This system is based on the educational and professional programs that are different in their complexity and level of received qualification, and provides diversification of higher education in terms, content and methods of teaching. The entire course consists of three stages: a theoretical base in the first and second years, vocational orientation in the third and fourth years and specialization in the fifth year or fifth and sixth years.
The main types of academic degrees awarded are:
Bachelor, Master, Specialist (Such as "Engineer" or "Teacher"), Candidate of Science (similar to Ph.D.) and Doctor of Science.
The Bachelor degree usually requires 4 years of study; the Masters degree, 2 years of study; after completing a Bachelor or equivalent degree; the Specialists degree, 5.5 years of study (Except Medical Study); Candidate of Sciences degree, 3-4 years of study; Doctor of Science degree, 3-4 years of study.
The professors & teachers are very demanding to the students compared to the study systems of other countries.
The Standard Academic system runs on a 2-semester basis:
First semester from 01/09 to 20/01.Followed by 2 weeks of winter vacations.
The Second semester from 05/02 to 01/07 Followed by summer vacation for 2 months;
Studies are carried out form 9.00 to 17.00 Mondays to Fridays and form 9.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays this includes lectures, practical and classroom work. Each period lasts 50 minutes followed by a 10 minute break. There is a lunch break from 12.30 to 13.10.
The study programs of each Semester consists of credits. If a student is unable to get all the required credits then he/she will not be allowed to sit for the exams which are held at the end of each Semester. Please note that this is general information. The actual times and dates could change depending on the educational establishment.
*Please note that the courses that are conducted in the Russian language require that you complete a 6-8 month preparatory course where the students receive an intensive training in the Russian Language and a refreshment course in basic science subjects.
