I would like to be the latest person to publicly jump on the decriminalise cannabis bandwagon. However I have held the opinion that it should happen for years.
There is a link to the guestbook at the bottom of this page, so please feel free to air your views. Anything amusing or incisive will get published on this site!
Or, if you'd have a go at seeing if you could do what Howard Marks used to, follow the "Greatest living Welshman" link at the bottom of the page and have a go at his game.
I recently visited Amsterdam with a group a friends. We spent a few days there sampling the sights,
and the local specialities.
Whilst there we spent a lot of our time smoking (surprisingly), in addition to exploring the city.
The argument against the decriminalisation of cannabis in this country (UK) and most others is that it it a dangerous drug, which leads to addiction,
health problems and progression onto harder drugs. I have been smoking cannabis for 5 years now; I'm still not a heroin addict (never even tried it),
I'm fit(ish) and healthy and I'm studying a degree at university, so my mind hasn't been adversly effected. To tell the truth I cause more trouble when
I get drunk than when I'm stoned.
Whilst in Amsterdam I didn't manage to get hold of anything that was of higher quality than I can get in this country, it was just far easier to get, and cheaper.
I was not once subject to an attempted mugging by an addict desperate for cash.
The World Health Organisation have recently had a report leaked in The New Scientist magazine, in which they stated the dangers of cannabis use were much less than those
of alcohol and tobacco, although they hastily withdrew this part from the published version of the report.
Cannabis has proven medical benefits for the sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis amongst other things, so why are people deprived of help?
If cannabis was decriminalised, it would lower the price, take it off the black market and therefore out of the hands of dodgy characters (I am reluctant to say criminals,
because I don't believe people who sell cannabis should be classed alongside rapists and crack dealers). It could be taxed and provide revenue for the government. Less money
would need to be spent on enforcing the law for it, so could be diverted elsewhere. It would seem a logical step to decriminalise it, unless there is some hidden agenda that I
am missing...
But don't take my word for it, read what they have to say on the debate at The New Scientist site.
As I mentioned at the top of the page, the guestbook is here! (Has been for ages). So get commenting...
