Some Famous Last Words from People We Admire

When asked by Merv Griffen why she was still performing, Tallulah Bankhead replied " It's one way of proving to people I'm not dead!" On her last trip to London, she tried to find some old aquaintances in the phone book, with no success. "They're all dead, & they didn't leave any forwarding addresses!" Shortly after that she became gravely ill & was hospitalized. Her last words were " Codeine, Bourbon!"

Aldous Huxley, author of "Brave New World" was terminally ill with Cancer died in the Fall of 1963. Huxley was just as curious about Death, as he was about Life. Weakened by his condition, he was lying in bed in apparent pain & turned to his wife with a note that read, "LSD-try it intermuscular-100mm." Huxley was still in pain, two hours later his wife, with his Doctors aproval, gave him another shot. He appeared to be silent, and relieved for quite a few hours. He died peacefully in his sleep.

Luigi Pirandello, Nobel prize winner, was dying. His doctor stood over his bed, silently. Pirandello turned towards the doctor & said, "No need to be so scared of words, Doctor. This is called dying!"

On 12/5/49 Huddie Ledbetter (The Famous Blues Guitarist, Leadbelly) lied in bed in Bellevue Hospital in NYC. He was greatly suffering from Polio & was quite weak. Leadbelly was speaking to his wife & said "You remember Careless Love"? He played some of the song for her, when the doctor walked in he said "Mr Ledbetter, You've got to put down that guitar & get some rest". Ledbelly replied "Doctor, if I put this guitar down, I'm never gonna wake up". He put down his guitar as suggested, and Died.

The Famous Poet, Dylan Thomas was on his Death bed in a Hospital, reportable suffering from Gastronomical difficulties, & Gout. He repeatably recited his most famous poem "Do not go gentle into that good night". Thomas was heavily sedated with 1/2 grain of Morphine, & was profusely hallucinating. To distract him from his own horrors, his lover, Liz, talked about a friend of hers who was suffering from the "DT's", & saw White Mice & Roses. Thomas looked profoundly into her eyes & said "Was that Roses Plural or Rose's roses, with an apostrophe?" He lapsed into a Coma, never woke!

Vincent Van Gogh, was reportably suffering from Syphillis, & Severe depression. He shot himself in his stomach, fouling a quick suicide. He lied in bed with his brother Theo at his side. Vincent said to Theo "Who could ever imagine that life could be so sad"? His last words to Theo were "I wish I were dead". He died the following morning.

Giacomo Cassanova, Writer, Philosopher, & infamous womanizer died at age 73. An aged person in the year of 1798. After the last rites were administered to him on his Deathbed, he loudly exclaimed "I have lived as a Philosopher and am Dying as a Christian"!

Fyodor Dostoevsky, a Famous Russian Philosopher, sought guidance though The New Testament Bible in his dying days. On his last day alive, he asked his wife to randomly open the Bible & read the 1st thing she saw. She read " And Jesus answering said unto him: Hold me not back for thus becometh us to fulfill all righteousness." Dostoevsky said " Did you hear? Hold me not back. My hour has come. I must die." He bid farewell to his Wife & Children, lost consciousness & Died.
