I know what you're thinking:
How can the second game of the season be a Must Win?
Well for those of you that know -- well you know.
For those of you that don't -- let's just say there's a bit of a rivalry going here. It is important to note that on the roster of the Fury is a Geriatric. -- Well he plays like one anyway. -- Let's call this guy "The Sniper" (How this guy became known as "The Sniper" when he only scored 1 goal all last season is another story). Anyway -- this "Sniper" guy (who for some unknown reason seems to get mentioned an awful lot on this website) was already on the roster of the Fury when the Geriatrics decided to jump from the Tuesday Night League to the Sunday Night League. ("The Sniper" was on Geriatrics roster on Tuesday Nights). --- So you see the conundrum that "The Sniper" was in.
I'll be the first one to admit that "The Sniper" could have handled the situation much better -- a quick decision would have been much better then the indecisive weaseling that "The Sniper" demonstrated in making his decision. -- Hey - both these teams had roster's to fill -- and money to collect. No -- No -- "The Sniper" waited until The Fury was in the midst of a playoff game before announcing his decision. (It's clear that "The Sniper's" indecisiveness had a draining effect on the team -- they were summarily trounced by the Coastal Pirates)
Ah -- but all that is in the past.
Well sort of.
On April 25, 1999, both teams faced off nursing identical 0 - 1 records. "The Sniper" immediately set the tone of the game by playing the first shift wearing his usual Geriatric jersey. The Jerry's did not find it amusing and were quick to protest to the ref. After donning his proper jersey -- the game continued.
The Fury jumped out to a quick 3 - 0 lead -- but they saw that lead dwindle to 3 - 2 by the end of the first period. "The Sniper", while feeling great joy for all his buddies on the Geriatrics, was non-the-less concerned in justifying his decision on staying with the Fury.
Then the rout was on Fury 11 Geriatrics 3.
And what happened with "The Sniper"?
He doubled his goal tally from all of last season. - Yeah -- he'll be welcomed back on Tuesday.
