Wayne Calls Penalty Shot !
I don't know about you -- but I've seen a lot of hockey games played in Eatontown -- and I've never seen a penalty shot called. That is until Tuesday February 23,1999. For those of you that were there for the 9:00 game between the Geriatrics and the Mobsters -- you witnessed what can only be described as the greatest showdown ever seen this side of the Hudson River.
It was late in the third period with the score tied 4-4 when one of the youngest guys on the Geriatrics grabbed the puck at the blue line and raced for the net. Well - actually the old guy barely got started before he was yanked down from behind by a Mobster. The play was immediately whistled by our man Wayne who signaled to the center face-off circle.
Needless to say, the Mobsters were reaching for their UZI's --- on the other side the Geriatrics were in disbelief. The 'Jerry' that was pulled down didn't even realize that it was a penalty shot - he actually thought it was just a penalty call. Teammates chided him later when he tried to pass the puck to a teammate that was standing near the bench.
Wayne quickly restored order and the old guy took the puck and raced for the net.
Too bad he didn't score.
The Mobsters were able to pull themselves together and score the winning goal a short time later.
