Cognitive Self-Change is the process of objective self-assessment. The process of objective self-assessment produces a clear and inescapable view of self-reality. Through the process of self-examination an individual will either choose to change or choose to remain as they are. But, in either case the choice is clear and conscious. It is nearly impossible to perform the objective self-examination without making a deliberate choice concerning a behavior. Offenders have serious emotional investments in the thinking that makes them who they are. Many choose to not change. Through concepts of individual responsibility and personal accountability Cognitive Self-Change facilitators help to motivate the offenders that are willing to try to live a more productive lifestyle. |
Cognitive Self-Change teaches offenders to look closely at the Central Beliefs, Attitudes and Cognitive Routines that drive the behaviors that get them into trouble and harm others. After looking closely at the thinking, offenders can often anticipate the thinking that drives a specific behavior before there is a commitment to action. Offenders are taught that new thinking can become comfortable and produce results that are satisfying. This leads to more responsible choices and self control. Other areas, such as anticipation of relapse thinking, high risk places and high risk people are discussed in group. COgnitive Slef-Change groups usually require a written relapse prevention plan. All of this takes place in a non-judgemental atmosphere where the offender is encouraged to be open and honest. The program format has a comprehensive set of rules of conduct that also teaches pro-social skills.
