Global Transcontinental Fiber Optic Network

(Implications On the Individual and Organization)

The implications of the Global Fiber Optic Network on both the individual and the Organization are astronomical.  The impacts of the global fiber network will dramatically change the abilities of all organizations Countries around the world.

The implications in detail exceed far beyond the cost savings and enhanced speed of communications around the world, but they do extend into the Benefits and Services pages found in this research.  Many other implications are listed below and broken out by who is benefiting.

Implications on the Consumer
    1. Permits more cost-effective multimedia and internet for businesses and consumers.
    2. Usage of Video Conferencing from Home to work will increase and become easier from a bandwidth perspective
    3. As Bandwidth increases the costs of residential use will continue to decrease as access speeds increase.
    4. Long distance phone charges will become a thing of the past as Voice over the Internet backbone service quality increases.
    5. Resources such as the 30-volume encyclopedia online can be retrieved in one second.  This opens up research possibilities for resources overseas or across the continent.
    6. Doctors and hospitals that are too far away or even in another country can get opinions about medical images from experts at a top-notch facility.-- End result patient care is increased.
Implications on Business
    1. Allows large businesses to avoid the Local Exchange Carriers access charges and connect directly to major carrier (Ex: Qwest)
    2. Permits more cost-effective multimedia and internet for businesses and consumers.
    3. Increases trend of using switched backbone networks as bandwidth increases.
    4. Increased level of Knowledge Management and information collaboration.
    5. Increased network efficiency in Multi-National Corporations
    6. Will open the doors and markets to developing countries by significantly reducing costs on internet access.  This virtual elimination of time/usage based costs for individuals has hampered technological development in developing countries.
    7. Virtual instantaneous connectivity will bring all countries up to technological speed and dramatically increase global economy
    8. Scientific research enhancement and rapid development within government research projects. Ex: Development of Soviet-US MirNet, a scientific intranet, built by Teleglobe is providing a transatlantic link with high speed ATM to scientists in the US and in Russia led MirNet, a scientific intranet.   This will link several universities in the US as well as Russian Universities and will hopefully open international relations and communications.  A scientific intranet, will open political doors and provide backbone for increased economic collaboration between Soviet Union and U.S.---Result more business, increased global stability etc...
    9. Health professionals can give consultations in real time video, call up patient profiles, get test results, related journal articles, x-rays and CT scans, and consult expert physicians from around the world all in one sitting.
    10. Optic fiber can be used in the agricultural industry and help farmers measure exact mixtures of fertilizers and chemicals to yield a certain productivity level and profit.
    11. International Markets will instantly open up in countries that are harder to access.
    12. Ecommerce business will continue to grow exponentially
