LESSON 2

AIM:
Increase the students ability to maintain straight and level flight, perform climbs and descents, and turns.

OBJECTIVE:
To have the student able to confidently and with a good degree of competence, perform the four basic manouvers (Climbing, Descending, Turning and Straight and Level Flight.) to an acceptable standard, while continuing to maintain visual and instrument references, and also start to master the skills involved in these manouvers as well as in  trimming the aircraft.

CONTENT:
1 -  Pre flight briefing
2 -  Review the following:
 (a) Aircraft servicing
 (b) Visual inspection
 (c) Engine starting procedures
 (d) Radio communication procedures
 (e) Taxiing the aircraft
 (f) Pre take off checklist
 (g) Take Off procedure
 (h) The standard departure procedure
 (i)  Straight and level flight
 (j) Medium banked turns
3 -  Introduction
 (a) Climbs and climbing turns - while maintaining visual and instrument references.
 (b) Glides and gliding turns - while maintaining visual and instrument references.
 (c) Level off and climbs and glides - while maintaining visual and instrument    references.
 (d) Torque Effect.
 review :
 (e) Circuit entry, approach, final and landing procedures.
 (f) Parking and Shut down procedures
4 -  Post flight briefing incorporating preveiw of next lesson.

METHOD:
Instructor will conduct a preflight briefing, which will review the previous flight, and  introduce the new manouvers to be learnt.  The instructor will then lead the student out to the aircraft and have the student demonstrate a “walk around”and “pre flight inspection”.  The instructor will then have the student attempt to demonstrate the start up procedures and radio calls, followed by Take off and departure procedures.  The student should be accustomed to the “handing over, taking over” methodology of flying.  Once in the training area, the instructor will then demonstrate the new manouvers (climbing turns, glides, gliding turns, and level off from glides and climbs), as discussed in the briefing, and then have the student attempt the new manouvers. The instructor will guide the student with the circuit entry, approach and landing procedures, finishing with parking and shut down procedures.
The flight will be completed with a post flight review briefing and a preview of the lesson to come.

EVALUATION:
The flight can be deemed successful if the student displays a basic knowledge of  climbs, straight and level flight, turns and glides.  During straight and level flight, the student should be able to maintain altitude between +/- 100ft and maintain airspeed within +/- 10kts and heading  within +/- 10 degrees of that which the instructor directs.
