AIM:
For the student
to continue improving their basic piloting skills, learn and use the HASEL
checks, and then conduct and recover from several power off stalls.
OBJECTIVE:
Conduct a review
of lessons 1 and 2, while increasing the student’s proficiency in the basic,
flight manouvers learned so far. Also to introduce manouvering at
the minimum controllable airspeed. And finally to learn, conduct
and recover from power off stalls, after having learned the appropriate
HASEL (Height Area Security Engine Lookout) checks.
CONTENTS:
1 - Pre Flight
Briefing.
2 - Review:
(a) Use of
checklist
(b) Engine
starting procedure
(c) Radio
communications procedures
(d) Take Off
(e) Standard
Departure procedure
(f) Climbs
and climbing turns - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
(g) Straight
and level flight - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
(h) Medium
banked turns - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
(i)
Glides and gliding turns - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
(j) Level
off proceures, both from climbimg and descending - while maintaining
visual and instrument reference.
(k) Circuit
entry, approach, final and landing procedures.
3 - Introduction
to:
(a) Manouvering
at minimum controllable airspeed - while maintaining visual and
instrument reference.
(b) Completion
of HASEL checks before conducting any stalling activity.
(c) Power
off, Imminent Stalls and recovery - while maintaining visual and instrument
reference.
(d) Power
off, Full stalls and recovery - while maintaining visual and instrument
reference.
(e) descents
and descending turns - while maintaining visual and instrument
reference.
4 - Post flight
Preview of the next lesson.
METHOD:
Instructor will
conduct a preflight briefing, which will review the previous flight and
its associated new manouvers. The instructor will then introduce
the new theory HASEL checklist and manouvers to be learnt. The instructor
will then send the student out to the aircraft to perform a “walk around”and
“pre flight inspection”. The instructor will then observe student
perform the start up procedures and radio calls, followed by take off and
departure procedures. Once in the training area, the instructor will then
review the manouvers learnt from the pervious lesson (climbing turns, glides,
gliding turns, and level off from glides and climbs), following which the
instructor will demonstrate the new manouvers (HASEL checks and the various
stalls) as discussed in the briefing, and then have the student attempt
these new manouvers. The instructor will guide the student through circuit
entry, approach and landing procedures, finishing with parking and shut
down procedures.
The flight will
be completed with a post flight review briefing and a preview of the lesson
to come.
EVALUATION:
The lesson can be
considered successful if the following can be displayed with reasonble
proficiency:
- The four basic
flight manouvers.
- With minimal assistance,
flight at minimum controllable airspeed.
- Pre-flighting,
engine starting, radio communications, taxiing, pre-take off checks and
parking and shut down.
Maintain Airspeed
to within +/- 10 kts of that required during:
- climbs
- level flight
- turns
- glides
- and manouvering
at minimum controllable airspeed.
Maintain assigned
heading and altitude within +/- 10 degrees and +/- 100 feet respectively.
