LESSON 4

AIM:
To hone the students skills in the performance of the key manouvers, while improving the skills most recently learnt in the preceeding leson and introduce power on stalls.

OBJECTIVE:
Review the previous three lessons, so as to increase the competence of the student while performing the basic flight manouvers.  Then to introduce power on stalls, flying a recangular course, S - turns across a road, flying figures of eights along a road, and basic emergency landings (so as to simulate engine failure after take off).

CONTENT:
1 - Preflight breifing
2 - Review the folloing :
 (a) Take Off
 (b) Standard Departure procedure
 (c) Climbs and climbing turns - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
 (d) Straight and level flight - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
 (e) Medium banked turns - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
 (f)   Glides and gliding turns - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
 (g) Manouvering at minimum controllable airspeed - while maintaining visual and    instrument reference.
 (h) Power off stalls - Both Imminent and Full stalls - while maintaining visual and    instrument reference.
 (i) Descents and descending turns with power - while maintaining visual and    instrument reference.
 (j)  Level off procedures - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
 (k) Circuit entry, approach and landing procedures.
3 - Introduction to:
 (a) Power on stalls - both imminent and full stalls - while maintaining visual and    instrument reference.
 (b) Flying a rectangular course (as per a circuit)
 (c) Basic Emergency landings (as per an engine failure after take off)
4 - Post flight briefing and preview of next lesson.

 METHOD:
Instructor will conduct a preflight briefing, which will review the previous flights and their associated manouvers.  The instructor will then go over the HASEL checklist and Power on stalling manouvers to be learnt.  The student will be sent  to the aircraft to perform a “walk around”and “pre flight inspection”.  The student will perform the start up procedures and radio calls, followed by take off and standard departure procedures. Once in the training area, the instructor will then review the manouvers learnt from the pervious lesson (manouvering at minimum controllable airspeed, Power off imminent and full stalls), following which the instructor will demonstrate the new manouvers (HASEL checks, the various stalls and the basic emergency landings) as discussed in the briefing.  The student will then attempt these new manouvers. The instructor will guide the student through circuit entry, approach and landing procedures, finishing with parking and shut down procedures.
The flight will be completed with a post flight review briefing and a preview of the lesson to come.

EVALUATION:
Lesson can be considered complete when student is competent to perform manouvers and procedures learnt during previous lessons.
The student should:
- have the ability to recognise stall and stall warning indications
- AND make safe and prompt recovery
- maintain assigned airspeed within +/- 10kts
- maintain assigned altitude within +/- 100ft
- maintain assigned heading within +/- 10 degrees
- Display a basic understanding and knowledge of simple emergency landings.
