AIM:
To introduce cross
wind operations, manouvering with reference to the ground and or objects
on the ground, and emergency procedures, climbs at best rate of climb and
best angle and flight with varied aircraft configurations (ie various stages
of flap).
OBJECTIVE:
To review previous
lessons, with an emphasis on manouvering by ground reference. To
increase the student’s ability to climb at best rate and best angle of
climb. Introducing cross wind take offs and landings. The introduction
of emergency procedures, changes of airspeed and aircraft configuration.
CONTENT:
1 - Preflight Briefing
2 - Review the following:
(a) Take off
(b) climbs
and climbing turns - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
(c) manouvering
at minimum controllable airspeed - while maintaining visual and
instrument reference.
(d) Power
OFF and ON stalls, Imminent and Full - while maintaining visual and
instrument reference.
(e) Flying
in a rectangular course (as per a circuit)
(f) Basic
emergency landings
(g) Standard
Circuit entry, approach and landing procedures.
3 - Introducing
:
(a) Cross
wind Take offs and landings
(b) Climbs
at best rate - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
(c) Climbs
at best angle - while maintaining visual and instrument reference.
(d) Emergency
Procedures
(e) Change
of airspeed and aircraft configuration (as per usage of flaps) - while
maintaining visual and instrument reference.
4 - Post flight
Briefing and preview of next flight.
METHOD:
Instructor will
conduct a preflight briefing, which will review the previous flights and
their associated manouvers. The instructor will introduce cross wind
operations theory. This will be followed by theory on best rate and angle
of climb. Next the instructor will cover emergency procedures, followed
lastly by change of airspeed and configuration (effects of using flaps).
The student will be sent to the aircraft to perform a “walk around”and
“pre flight inspection”. The student will perform the start up procedures
and radio calls, followed by take off and standard departure procedures.
Once in the training area, the instructor will then review the manouvers
learnt from the pervious lesson (manouvering at minimum controllable airspeed,
Power off and on imminent and full stalls, basic emergency landings), following
which the instructor will demonstrate the new manouvers (cross wind operations,
best rate of climb, best angle of climb, change in airspeed and aircraft
configuration) incorporating the emergency procedures as discussed in the
briefing. The student will then attempt these new manouvers and emergency
procedures. The student will attempt circuit entry, approach and
landing procedures, finishing with parking and shut down procedures.
The flight will
be completed with a post flight review briefing and a preview of the lesson
to come.
EVALUATION:
The lesson is successfully
completed when the student:
- can recognise
imminent and full stalls and make effective and prompt recovery
- perform ground
reference manouvres with fairly accurate wind drift corrections and good
co-ordination, while maintaining airspeed +/- 10 kts, altitude +/- 100ft
and heading within 10 degrees.
- Has thorough understanding
of the concept and practice of cross wind take offs and landings
- has a working
knowledge of emergency procedures and is able to perform accordingly
with minimum assistance.
