Sinbad laid completely still, just staring into the darkness, listening... he could hear low noises of crewmembers talking from one of the cabins. He just laid there, completely still, feeling the movements of the ship. He could not sleep. The sea was calm this night, everything was fine, but still he had this feeling of unease in him, he did not know why, but he had been feeling this way every night for the past week. He had been trying to figure out why he felt this way. Was it his responsibilities as a captain? The fear of losing someone he cared for. Maybe something in his inner consciousness that haunted him? Did he feel this way because something special was going to happen? Good or bad he did not know, maybe both...
Sinbad stared into the darkness, trying to figure out more reasons, when he became aware of something... a strange noise that filled his head and became stronger and stronger.... where did it come from? The unease he had been feeling became stronger. He leaped out of his hammock, and ran up on deck.
He looked around him in the dim light, everything seemed normal. But still.... Doubar was at the tiller and had spotted him. "Little brother.." Sinbad did not want any of the crew to know about how he had been feeling, he took a deep breath, went over to his brother and nodded in greeting. The unease became stronger again.
"It's a beautiful night, isn't it, little brother."
"Hm....yes...nice." "So, who should meet when we got back to Baghdad?.... Sinbad?"
Sinbad did not listen. The sound was back, somehow it frightened him, but it also made him curious.
"Little brother are you all right?"
"Do you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
"That sound."
"I don't hear a thing. Are you sure you are feeling all right?"
"I'm fine."
Then they felt it... the Nomad made a little jerk, then another, a bit stronger. Then one so strong that Sinbad fell back and into the railing.
"What on earth was that?" Doubar exclaimed
The uneasy feeling Sinbad had been having suddenly turned into fear. A fear unlike anything he had been feeling before. "Maybe we've hit a reef. I'll go down to check for damages!"
Sinbad ran down to the door, when Firouz came out of it. "Sinbad, I think you better see this!"
Sinbad followed Firouz into Bryn's cabin. Bryn sat on the floor, she was like in a trance and her eyes was glowing.. "Bryn!"
"Sinbad... I sense very strong magic..." Bryn began, then she passed out.
The Nomad started to shake more and more vigorously. "What the devil?" Sinbad headed for the door.
"Firouz, stay here with Bryn. I'll go check this out."
He went up to Doubar again, Rongar was there helping him with the tiller. But then.. as sudden as this had started.. it stopped.. everything was calm like nothing had happened.
"What on earth was that?" "I don't know Doubar, but there must have been some magic involved." "How's that?"
"Well, Bryn.." He interrupted himself when he saw Bryn and Firouz coming towards them.
"Bryn.. is everything all right?" "I'm fine now."
"She woke up when the Nomad stopped shaking." Firouz continued.
"Something tells me we should stay in this area until morning." Sinbad said "Maybe we'll find out more in the daylight."
Early the next morning, Sinbad went up on deck, and looked around him on the calm blue sea.
*That weird phenomenon wasn't the only thing that disappeared last night." he thought to himself *The unease is gone as well.*
He went over to Firouz who was looking out over the sea in his magniscope.
"Do you see anything Firouz?"
"Nothing except a tiny island in the horizon, an island that is not on the map. "An island? Let me see." Firouz handed Sinbad the magniscope.
"By the Gods..." Sinbad gave the magniscope back to Firouz. Doubar and Rongar came up behind them.
"What is it?" Firouz asked. "Sinbad turned to his older brother. "Doubar, there is something you should see." Doubar looked through the magniscope.
"I see a small island."
"Don't you see what island it is?"
"Any special you had in mind, little brother?"
"Something like a place that is half real and half imaginable." "You mean like.." Firouz began.
Yes...it's The Isle of Dawn!"
"The Isle of Dawn?!" Doubar questioned "But that's impossible, it disappeared, and..
"But don't you see.." Sinbad interrupted him.
"If the Isle of Dawn has reappeared, that means.." "that Dim Dim has come back," Doubar continued. "and with him.." "Maeve." Sinbad finished.
"Are you sure about this, little brother?"
Bryn came up to them "Have any of you seen Dermott? I can't seem to find him anywhere." They looked at eachother for a second. "Bryn, I think I know where Dermott is." Sinbad said. "Where?"
"On an island not to far from here." "Why would he be there?"
"Why won't we go there and find out?"
When they reached the island, Sinbad, Doubar, Firouz, Rongar and Bryn went ashore in the longboat.
They walked for a bit. Then Sinbad saw it, the portal leading into Dim Dim's garden.
"Stay here." he told the others, as he walked towards the portal.
His heart started pounding in his chest. Would this be it? Would he really meet Maeve again? and Dim Dim?
He slowly went through the portal.
At first he didn't see anyone, but then he saw Dim Dim. "Master Dim Dim?"
Dim Dim turned and walked towards him. "Sinbad, I knew you would come here." "I guess you did." They hugged. "But where is.." "Maeve? She's here Sinbad, but first, there's some things I have to tell you."
"You are probably wondering how this could be happening. I can't tell you everything, but I'll tell you this. I was able to get Maeve into the realm where I have been held by evil forces. There she would be safe from the evil forces who have become stronger. This you know. In this realm she could continue her training together with me, and become more powerful herself.
Finally the time came when she got strong enough to help me break out of the realm we were trapped in, and, by doing so, proving she has become powerful enough to have a chance to defeat Rumina and her father.
"Her father? But he's dead.. how?"
"Somehow he have been brought back to life, this is all I can tell you right now. Once out of the realm, we recreated the Isle of Dawn on a place you would find it."
Sinbad noticed that Dim Dim was looking at something behind him. He turned, and saw Maeve coming towards him, Dermott was perched on her arm.
"Maeve.." Sinbad didn't know what to say. He took her hand, and looked into her eyes. There was something in them, a glow he hadn't seen before.
"Sinbad." "Maeve, I.. I knew we would meet again someday."
"Me too Sinbad, me too." "I see Dermott found you first."
"Well then, "Dim Dim said "I'll be staying here for now. But you should get going." "Where?" Sinbad asked. "To Basra. There is someone there you should meet. My wife Chairpra."
Sinbad and Maeve went through the portal, and Maeve reunited with the rest of the crew, and she was introduced to Bryn. "This is Bryn," Sinbad said. "she and I share the same taste in jewelry." Maeve and Bryn shook hands. "Hi, I'm Maeve."
Sinbad thought it was something strange about the way Maeve looked at Bryn, almost as if she knew her.
On the ship Maeve told Sinbad about how hard the last days had been for her, she had been so worried that she wouldn't be strong enough to break through the barrier between this world and the realm she and Dim Dim were in. Sinbad thought about this, could it somehow had been the way she had felt that made him feel uneasy.
In Basra the rest of the crew got the day off, while Sinbad, Maeve, Doubar, Rongar, Bryn and Firouz went to see Chairpra. But first they went into a tavern to get something to eat.
As they were sitting there, talking. Doubar suddenly noticed that Sinbad was gone, and Maeve too.
"Where's Sinbad and Maeve?" he asked.
"They just went out a while ago, Sinbad told me they would be right back." Bryn said.
Just then, Maeve and Sinbad came in the door. Firouz was the first to notice, and he just stared towards the door. Rongar raised his eyebrows, Bryn looked curiously at them, and Doubar sat up a smile, "Why, would you look at that." Sinbad and Maeve came over to the table. "So, little brother, you cut your hair," "and shaved" Firouz continued.
"What's with the outfit?" Bryn asked, the loose white skirt, blue pants, a blue vest and a red sash and headband was different than what she had ever seen Sinbad wear. "It was just a certain sorceress here, who didn't want me going around looking like a pirate. "Sinbad said. "And I just wanted him to look the way I remembered him," Maeve added "and I've always loved that headband of his."
They sat down again. "So, why do we have to visit this Chairpra?" Bryn asked.
"She will help us prepare." Maeve said.
"Prepare for what?"
"For what is going to happen once Rumina finds out about my return." Maeve answered.
The crew reached Chairpra's house, and Maeve knocked on the door "Hello, anybody home?" No one answered, but the door was open, so she looked inside, "Hello, Chairpra, are you here?".
"Looks like she's not at home." Sinbad said.
Then they heard a voice "I'm right here.", they turned, and saw Chairpra standing in the door.
"I had some things to take care of, and it took me longer than I expected." she went over to a chair and sat down, "It's nice to see you all here."
"You wanted to talk with us about something?" Sinbad asked.
"Yes, actually it is Maeve I need to speak with. Would the rest of you be kind and wait outside for a moment?"
Maeve sat down beside Chairpra, and the rest of the crew left the room.
"There is something I need to tell you about Rumina." Chairpra said. "Your magic has become much more powerful, but so has Rumina's. And, as Dim Dim probably have told you, her father has been brought back to life."
Maeve nodded, "Yes, even if I have a very strong belief in my magic, I fear what will happen when I run into them next."
"As I once told you, good is more powerful than evil. And, there is another important thing you need to know...."
Outside Chairpra's house, the others were waiting for Maeve to come out. "What's taking her so long?" Doubar asked impatiently.
A minute later, Maeve came out the door. "So, what did Chairpra tell you?" Sinbad asked. Maeve shrugged "Just a few things about Rumina."
"What do we do now then?" Bryn asked.
"I don't know.. where were you headed? Before all of this happened I mean."
"We were on our way to Baghdad to deliver something to a man .. Tindor, I think his name was." Sinbad said. "But what about Rumina?"
"Why should we sit around and wait for her to show up. When she does, I'll be ready. But I have a feeling we will hear from her soon." Maeve answered.
Through a pool of water a pair of evil eyes were watching the crew as they walked down to the ship. "Sooner than you think, peasant witch, sooner than you think."
On the Nomad, Firouz came up on deck with a small box in his hand. He went over to Sinbad. "Is this the box we're supposed to bring to this Tindor?" "Yes, that is it, be careful with that."
"Do you know what's in it?"
"No, but we're getting payed 100 gold pieces to deliver it, so I'm sure it's something important."
Bryn came over to them "What's that?" she nodded towards the box.
"It's what we are supposed to deliver to this man in Baghdad"
Bryn touched the box, but quickly pulled her hand back. "What is it?" Sinbad asked. "I felt something." "What?" "I don't know."
Firouz's curiosity had been aroused. "Can't we open it and see what's inside?" "I think we ought to keep that thing closed, Firouz."
But Firouz had already tried to open it. "Don't worry Sinbad, it won't open anyway, it looks like you need some sort of key."
"Let me look at that." Maeve had come over to them, and had heard what they were talking about. Firouz handed her the box. Maeve gasped once the box touched her hand.
"What's in this holds strong magic, white magic." she said.
"Well I look forward to meeting this Tindor and finding out what's in that box." Sinbad said.
The next day, teh crew were walking through the crowded streets of Baghdad. "So, Sinbad, do you have any idea where this Tindor lives?" Doubar asked.
"Yes, I got a note with the box." Sinbad answered. "It must be over there." Sinbad pointed towards one of the houses in front of them. They went up to it and knocked on the door. An elderly man opened. "Are you Tindor?" Sinbad asked. "Yes I am." "We have come to deliver this to you." Sinbad handed him the box. Tindor's face brightened up. "Thank the Gods, it's finally here." He took the box, and gestured for the crew to come inside. "Look at his medallion." Firouz wispered to Sinbad. "It has the same pattern that's on the box." Tindor went over to a table and picked up a bag. He handed it to Sinbad. "Here's your payment, 100 gold pieces as I promised. Then he broke loose a piece of his medallion, and put it in the box. They heard a small klick, and it opened. Tindor lifted a small glass-like rock out of the box. "What's that?" Sinbad asked "This is a powerful talisman, it belongs to me, I am known as the keeper of this talismam, also known as Tindor's Talisman. I have kept it with a friend, and the key to teh box here with me, to keep the wrong people from getting to it. But now I needed it's help, so I had it sent to me by someone I knew could be trusted." "Why do you need it's help?" Bryn asked. "It's my wife, she has been cursed by this evil sorceress, and now she's dying.
"Sorceress?" Maeve questioned. "What is her name?" "I don't know what her name is. But let me tell you. About two weeks ago, the sorceress came through here. She destroyed everyone who came in her way, one of them being my wife. But since she has some magic powers of her own, she didn't die instantly like the others."
"And you think the talisman will save her?" Maeve asked. "I hope so."
"Maybe I can help you, I'm an apprentice of Dim Dim's, my name is Maeve." "Dim Dim? I know him" Tindor opended a door"
"Come with me Maeve, my wife is in here." He turned to the others.
"The rest of you might want to have a look around in my garden while you're waiting. It's out that door." He nodded towards a door thet lead out to the back of the house.
The crew went inside again. Tindor was there, a woman standing beside him. "This is my wife, Salena." he said. Salena greeted the crew. "Hello" she turned to Maeve. "I want to thank you for your help with breaking the curse on me."
Later, on the Nomad, Maeve came up to Sinbad at the tiller. Dermott came and landed beside them. "Rumina survived this time too, it appears." "Yes she did." Maeve looked out over the sea for a minute.
"So how do you feel about having me around again?"
"It feels great Maeve, I've missed you."
"I missed you too."
Firouz had discovered a shelf with small bottles and jars with various herbs and spices in. "May I have a look at these?" he asked. Tindor nodded. "Be my guest, just be careful." "Of course."
Sinbad strolled off by himself out in the garden, he needed to think. Bryn came up behind him. "Sinbad, there you are, Doubar was wondering where you went. Is something wrong?" It's just that I have a feeling something will happen soon, something that worries me."
"It couldn't possibly have something to do with that, could it? Look!" Bryn exlaimed. Sinbad turned around and saw something familiar coming towards them. "Yes, it definatly could have something to do with that."
"What is it, a tornado?" "No, that, that is Rumina. Come on, we have to warn the others!"
Doubar and Rongar saw Sinbad and Bryn running towards the house.
"What's wrong?" Doubar asked, then he spotted the whirlwind. "BY all that is holy! Rumina?" "Yes, we have to warn Maeve!"
Firouz were looking at some of the herbs, when the others came bargin in the door, and he almost dropped it on the floor.
"What's going on?" "Rumina-trouble."
Maeve had heard the noice and came out, with Tindor behind her.
"The spell on Tindor's wife has been broken. But what's going on with you?"
"Well it looks like Rumina has found out about your return." Sinbad said.
"What? Where is she?" "Out there, in the garden." "What are we going to do?" Firouz asked. "We have to go out there and face her." "Right." Sinbad agreed. "Tindor, you better stay inside." "The crew went outside, but they didn't see anyone."
"Where is she?" Doubar asked. "Looking for someone?" Rumina came out from behind some trees. "Hello Sinbad, long time no see."
"What do you want this time?" "I heard news about the return of a friend of yours, and I just wanted to welcome her back."
Rumina raised her hand, ready to shoot a magic wave at Maeve, but Maeve was faster and threw a fireball at Rumina.
Rumina just waved a hand, and the fireball dissolved itself. She laughed. "You'll have to do better than this peasant witch."
Turok suddenly appeared next to Rumina. My daughter, stop chatting and show them what you really came here for."
Rumina quickly sent a strong wave of magic right at Maeve, it sent her flying, and she landed on the ground, unconscious. "Maeve!" Sinbad and teh others ran over to her. "Now, dear captain," Turok said. "I believe you and I had some unfiniched business." Turok sent a flask og magic towards Sinbad. "No!" Bryn screamed. She jumped in front of Sinbad. Their bracelets started glowing and sent out a light that protected them from Turok's attack.
Rumina looked angrily at Bryn. "I really hadn't expected this from you, of all people." "What do you mean?"
Meanwhile, Maeve had regained consciousness, she moved a little, and Rongar, who stood nearest to her noticed it. Maeve could barely speak, but she whispered to Rongar. "Go get.. the talisman, bring it to me." Rongar slowly moved towards the door, and went inside. A second later he came out again, and he gave the talisman to Maeve. Turok and Rumina was too busy with Sinbad and Bryn to notice.
Maeve held the talisman and it started to glow, the light surrounded her for a second, then it disappeared. Maeve quicly jumped up and hurled a wave of magig at Rumina, it came unexpectedly at her, and she flew back, knocked unconscious.
Turok quickly ran to her. "Rumina, my child!" "You'll pay for this" he said, then he misted away with his daughter.
"Maeve gave the talisman to Tindor. "And I want to thank you for letting me borrow this. It saved my life, as well as Salena's"
