I just watched magician/ illusionist David Blaine & his 'Vertigo' feat over on satellite TV. He took inspiration from the 5th (/ 16th?) century Stylites (priests) who took to standing atop tall, narrow, pillars in order to separate themselves from the decadent society at large & to be closer to God.
As my personal thought: I truly believe in taking time out from a society that's running 'amok'. If you believe that your instinct (= God's quiet whisper) is telling you to do otherwise, it might be wise to visit your house of worship to have quiet communion with God. Trust God to set you back on the correct path.
