D3591 The Swanage Railway Gronk

During our visit to Swanage to cover the DORSET VOYAGER naming ceremony, we had a nice picnic in the public viewing area opposite the Swanage MPD. Just in time for a spot of shunting activity with D3591, The Swanage "Gronk" :-)
The following photos were taken in an attempt to show how the 117 DMU and BR Standard 4 80104 loco in the goods shed siding at Swanage Station swapped places.

Photo 1-01: D3591, The Swanage gronk starts a shunting turn from the bay platform siding. In the adjacent goods shed siding (out of view to the right beyond the bridge) the standard 4 80104 is stabled behind the 117 DMU.

Photo 1-03: Standing by the carriage wash, One of the vertical rotary brushes can be seen to the right of the tracks, these huge brushes are used to scare the dirt off the passenger stock during coach cleaning.

Photo 1-07: Once the points are changed using the manual ground lever, the shunter is hand signalled forward over the points.

Photo 1-08: The 117 DMU being propelled into bay platform siding where it was uncoupled.

Photo 1-09: D3591 returns light stopping clear of points, points were again set for goods shed siding, then the trusty gronk disappeared under the bridge into the siding.

Photo 1-0a: The gronk returned hauling standard 4 80104.

Photo 1-0b: Gronk coupled to the standard 4, Once the point has been changed, D3591 propels the standard 4 into the bay platform siding.

Photo 1-0c: And back she comes again hauling the standard 4 and the Class 117 DMU out of the bay platform siding.

Photo 1-0f: Once clear of the point, it is again changed and the shunter can proceed back into the goods shed siding. with the DMU in the siding behind the standard 4.

B.R. Class 08 diesel-electric shunter D3591, Historical Notes.

1958 (DEC) D3591 was built at Crewe works and carried overall Brunswick Green livery.

1958 (DEC) D3591 First allocated to Newton Heath on the London Midland region.

1971 (NOV) D3591 allocated to Glasgow, Polmadie Depot.

1972 (MAR) D3591 moved to Eastfield depot.

1973 (MAY) D3591 moved to Ayr.

1973 D3591 was renumbered to the TOPS scheme receiving number 08476

1973 D3591 Overhauled and repainted in Rail Blue livery with new number 08476.

1980 08476 overhauled at Glasgow.

1980 08476 moved to Dunfermline and Thornton Junction.

1984 (DEC) 08476 moved to Swindon for storage awaiting overhaul.

1986 08476 withdrawn and stored at Swindon.

1986 (MAR 21) 08476 purchased for the Swanage Railway.

1986 08476 was repainted in B.R. Green livery and renumbered to D3591.

1999 D3591 was repainted in B.R. Black livery (A livery it never carried when owned by B.R.)
